There are always other options to a tall stem.
Got this 58cm (per serial number!) custom built Serotta from the son of the original owner.
Came with a tall thread-less extender, high rise stem and super deep drop bars as well.

It really is a comfy, if not racy, bike.

In other words, for a spacer to allow your stem to go higher than they otherwise would, you would have to put the wedge under threads.

But you didn't get any height advantage, because you you shoved your stem down about as far as if you had cut the steerer normally.

So my statement is entirely correct. And you keep being rude.

Whatever you say man, just more BS as usual from you.

Sure. I commented on something mechanical, you replied erroneously and then started taking great offense based on reception of your error. And that's without a single comment on my part about how homely the headset now looks.

Clearly this is a me problem.

Glad you like it.

This thread really speaks to the advantages of sloping top tubes especially as some people lose flexibility. I have never believed in a forever bike however if I were to build one, sloping top tube would be a must. These forums are full of various cludges to keep their bikes rideable and some incredible tall stem assembly’s which no doubt affect the ride and handling of the bike.

Yet often little about potential safety...

A sloped top tube is not going to change the handling caused by a particular handlebar height, though it will interfere with standover in a way that a tall steerer or stem will not.

I wonder if there's a difference in the forces exerted on the stem and on the top head bearing and fork tube between
the big L Technomic stem and the very tall "half Y" mountain bike style?

I’ve got a couple of builds Rube Goldberg would be proud of, lol. The tall seatpost Thud Buster, the sloping toptube, threadless headset, the steertube extension Satori, and a long stem to convert the Rocky Mountain Sherpa 30 road touring into my flatbar hybrid.

If only I could find my glasses would this compliment and qualify my build!

Maybe it needs an ashtray…

I know that on my race bikes nor on my mountain bikes nor on my hybrid, I don't like a too low positionned stem

It is pretty much embarrassing, but here is my arthritic set up...

And my seat is now lower then my bars by about 2cm now days too!

I will say that I am coming to like the looks of a nice aluminum dirt drop stem. A Technomic is fine until it gets extended pretty far and then to me it is a bit awkward looking.

[QUOTE=Lbxpdx;23676925]This frame is not small, it is 21", but the geometry of the Voyageur is kinda odd so the head tube is short. I bought this bike a few years ago, had a rack and bag on the front, so the technomic stayed, but it just hung in the garage. I moved the parts to another bike, was planning on selling the voyageur and thought the technomic alone looked goofy. I found some old dirt drop stems for cheap on CL, and thought it would look better to a potential buyer. I took a quick ride after swapping the stems, hence the half wrapped bar, and now I second guessing my original intention to sell it. It definitely looks better, and it feels better to ride with the longer stem.

A 21 in frame is a small frame, in anyones book! Look at the size of that head tube, it is puny! Nice bike though!

That doesn't look bad to me, and I'm considering bars like that. I can move my brifters right over.
