Campagnolo Tipo front cones?

I am wondering about front cones for Tipo hubs. I have an 83 Trek 700 with this front hub, and recently came into two vintage bikes also with low flange Tipos. Rear cones are fine, and I bought some NOS replacement ones on this forum if ever needed. On the two 1972s, the cones are not quite perfect. I don’t really speak Campagnolo, but I thought I saw somewhere that some more modern Campy cones are the same. I know the Records were different and used larger bearings. I don’t want to pay $30-40 per cone though as that would make no sense. Any info is appreciated.

There are four in stock and there are two Tippo axles:
The stash box yielded four cones and two axles. Lemme know. Smiles, MH

The only cones here were actually NR but they are better because they are hardened and polish quite well. So here is the picture of the assemblies. PM me with shipping info. Smiles, MH

I am confused as I thought that the Tipo with the 3/16” balls were not compatible with Record and NR. I was hoping some people more fluid in the nuances of Campagnolo might confirm that some of the later front hubs used 3/16” balls and perhaps those cones might be interchangeable with the Tipo or close enough.

Well all is not lost. I contacted a friend and he has a couple of front hubs being sent to me that are Tippo, so yer parts should be on the way and it will just be a bit of a wait. And I can see if the cone are actually different. Smiles, MH

Thanks much on that. I would guess that these Tipo hubs get a bit of flak compared to the legendary Recod and NR. To some of us, I would bet they are still fine quality compared to other more mundane offerings. Many of us grew up on Schwinns with Normandy hubs and soft cones, so it’s all relative I guess.

Was there ever a NR hub? I think they were all Record. But that's quibbling.

I believe Jim Merz has gone on record (no pun intended) as saying NT (Nuovo Tipo) cones were closer to Normandy than Record in hardness or durability. More likely to be OK on a front though. Rears, especially right-rear, lead a tougher life.

Speaking of Mr Merz, it was he who sold me the extra rear Tipo cones, so I have 4 or 5 extra there. I have also read that Record cones could be substituted in these rear hubs. I also noted that some front hubs like the Chorus used 3/16” balls and the dimensions looked as if they could possibly fit the Tipo. I thought perhaps someone here may have had experience with this. I think the Campy bunch is kinda a tough crowd with wanting the higher spec stuff though.

Well it finally happened! I had ordered a few hubs for parts and they showed up today. Darned post office only delivered twice this week and they don't seem to be getting better. But I now have the cones and hub parts available. Smiles, MH
