Schwinn continental 2

a few years ago I found a 1978 schwinn continental someone was throwing away, so i took it. I just now got around to fixing it. I put new alloy wheels on it and tuned it up, rides very nice other than the lack of decent brakes. I have read somewhere that the Wienmann? brakes that came on these are pretty good, but mine are horrible. They are hard to adjust, and they dont really stop the bike, the cable just kinda stretches after the pads contact the rim. I probably need new cables, but do you think with new cables these brakes would work well enough, or should I go buy some new side pull brakes?

In addition to the new cables, I would put new brake pads(shoes, blocks, whatever you call them). Your's are likely all dried out and hard from age. The old Scott/Mathauser salmon colored pads work wonderfully, but are not made anymore and hard to find. They come up on ebay from time to time. Koolstop also makes some good pads that should be available at your local bike shop. Be sure to clean the braking surface on the rims also. Any grease, oil, wax or other gunk will adversely effect your braking.
