Peugeot Ladies Tourer
On a wave of indignation at the current oil price I put my car in the garage and dragged down my old bike from the loft. It has brought back a wave of nostalgia, even more so since I have read some of your messages. I bought it new in London in the late '70's and it was called a Ladies Tourer, complete with skirt guard, basket and stand. I used to cycle all over London with my toddler in a basket on the rear wheel and the sense of freedom and independence was unforgettable! Unfortunately although the memories are untarnished the same cannot be said of the specimen now standing at the back door. It has the symbol 103 on a sticker together with made in France, simplex gears(5) and a rear brake which doesn't work. Can I take it to a modern bike shop for refurbishment or should I put it quietly away with the memories and go look at new bikes?

The right bike shop will be able to spiff it up for little money.
The front brake is the key brake, but brakes of this vintage are easily refurbed.
and you will be riding in retro style (which, by the way, is all the style these days)

I do hate it when fashion catches up with me and exposes me for the poseur I truly am.
The 103 sticker is indicative of a lower end Peugeot. However, if you simply want a bike to tool about the neighbourhood on, it should be fine. If you're going to ride centuries, you might want something else. Much of a bike's value depends upon the use to which it is put. The basket and stand sound right for this bike.
I would talk to your local bike shop and get an estimate for the repair costs. What you have described is not an overwhelming repair. It could probably bear fresh bearing and grease, as well as cables and chain.
