Yeah, my photo skills are worth the price y’all are paying.

ACS slingshot WITH hole doodad for cantis. Kinda nifty. Bullmoose or slingshot? Decisions…

It would make an interesting poll subject, no?

Photo assist:

Trek 850 w/slingshot stem (steel steering tube with alloy clamp arms) and anodized alloy handlebar.

Chromed-steel Bullmoose on Peugeot Canyon Express. I don't know if you can even get one of these in alloy. Everything I find with a quill-stem is chrome-moly.

It's hard to tell which is heavier without weighing them, although I would bet on the Bullmoose.

Wow! I just googled my term. I did defeat Google! I shall now bask in the afterglow of this stunning verbal victory.

Thanks for pointing this out to me!

The leather and brass and olive drab duffle in that setup reminds me of the cockpit of a Sopwith Camel! An old school analog speedometer would complete the look.

I think the current, unattainable, Nitto Bullmoose set-up is aluminum but they seem to be out of stock. The slingshot would look very period correct on my Diamond Back Mean Streak since both were built in the same year but I already have the Bullmoose set up installed. Someday if I get a wild hair…

Slight tangent; are mid-'80s bullmoose bars worth anything? I have access to one off of a KHS Montana, and I'd like to re-home it, but only if it's worth more than the cost of postage.

Should be I think, especially if not too rusty and can be cleaned up well.

eBay has them all over the map, as usual. The Nittos command a premium, and those are chrome-moly. I think the alloy ones are virtually unobtainium. If you clean them up, $40-$60 would be reasonable, I expect.

Thanks. They're in very good condition; just a bit of rust around the bolt, easily fixed with Coke and foil.

As cool as they are, my arms are much too short for them to be comfortable, but they'll be perfect for someone else.

Well you're in what I assume is/was/still an epicenter to some degree for this sort of thing so maybe just pass it along to a worthy recipient.

I still can't get used to the idea of hydraulic shocks on a vintage bicycle.

But then I came across this little gem:

"...we all know that any mountain bike is not possible without suspension travel as it acts as a shock absorber on uneven trails or descents. So, Brian Skinner was the first to introduce a mountain bike with a suspension in 1982."
- from "The History of Mountain Biking, From 1930 to Date"

Forty years ago? That's vintage in anybody's book.

Finished this up the other day. Fun ride and not many of these around. The research I found was that this was a small builder out of Birmingham AL. Great quality paint and "smooth" welds. Has anyone ever seen another one?

I've lived in Birmingham for 30+ years, not heard of Smoother. I will ask around at the LBS next I am there.

I picked up this '92 Axis Pro as a parts bike, since it had a lot of its original XTR bits on it and it was cheap, Then I realised that it's a nice frame, so here's my part's bin resto.

Found an unloved Trek 930 with Shimano Altus A10 group. Date of birth: 1993, in dark green and last of the lug-breed in CroMo. Took all day to clean her up, touch of matching paint here and there, drop of oil... the works. These '90 bikes are so lovely, nearly indestructible and meant to be used hard.

That's very nice. Almost looks "showroom." Even after all these years.

Thye were handbuilt in USA with some of the best steel tubes , the bike can always be upgraded with higher end components

Handbuilt indeed and that shows... I have great respect for builders who can make bikes like this. I figure it all has to do with love for your work and the product you manufacture. And I like the setup as it is. Love to keep a bike as original as possible, because it is a piece of bike-history.
