I grabbed this Giant ATX 760 from the town dump day back in October. It was about the most ate-up bike I've ever seen: middle ring worn to nothing, chain worn out, cassette chewed up, front derailleur cage worn through on the inside, brake levers gouged, frame scratched and tired but not dented, every bearing gritty and loose, tires and brakes used up, and absolutely caked in filth. The last owner used this thing HARD. But it was a quality frame with good components (Deore LX), so I decided to rebuild it.

I stripped everything off the frame, tossed some of it, cleaned up what could be salvaged, and started refurbishing. I cleaned and sanded the frame before priming and painting it. Bars, seatpost, brake levers, and pedal cages got new paint as well. New crankset, chain, cassette, brake pads, grips, cables, bearings, front derailleur, plus some tires I had lying around and I ended up with this:

Haven't ridden it yet aside from a few spins around the driveway; hopefully I'll get it out on some local fire roads tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

Neither of these are mine, but I scored the first one for a friend, a 1988 Stumpjumper that looks like a low mileage bike.

Same friend picked up this Ross Mt. Hood at a flea market recently, but the Stumpjumper is a better fit for him:

I believe it's a quill stem, with that spherical joint that's meant to sit flush with the headset.

Yep, it's a quill. It's also as heavy as it looks. Heavier even. The one I had for a while was anyway. I would think hey that's a cool piece and would look great on an old mtb. Then I would pick it up, and go nahhhhh,,,,BD

I don't know if it's the official term for them but we always called that stem a dogbone.

Thanks. The bike is so new, I'm still afraid to take if off any path. . . yet.

It (the album) is rather obscure. Few, very few, know it. I love it, but admit that I abuse the title for things like this.

Yes, I believe the dogbone stem was a rough knockoff of a Cook Bros. design. Ross used them on their MTBs around the mid 80's and they have a .883" size steerer, which is probably why they're typically intact on these bikes...

I love that album also, I found it on vinyl years ago along with the Live Stiffs compilation.

And much to wife's excitement, I broke it down today to clean and regrease everything.

J.P. Weigle, sliver brazed, built for a former CAT 1 road racer, who had it set up as a fast commuter. I did a partial period correction (knobby tires, MTB bars and stem) but left on a nifty set of Sachs shifters. The color makes it look more modern than it is.

Gary Fisher Marlin, not sure if the sloping top tube makes it vintage or not, no idea what year it is (7-speed on back).
Currently deciding what I'm doing with it, just a hair small for me, was thinking of drop bars and making it a tourer/commuter.

If that saddle height is right, then the bike's not too small for you. Perhaps a different bar/stem would put the bars where you want them - higher or farther out front, depending on what you mean by small.

Possibly a 1996 in Emerald Green.

Feels a bit short in length. Effective top tube length (if measured level) is around 56cm which is where I like road bikes, so maybe I'll swap a drop bar on there and see how it feels. I might check the seat to handlebar length on my Timberlin to compare it to.

Someone PM'd me and got me searching, and yep looks like '95-'96 timeframe per a data sheet I found.
