I've noticed some freewheels seem to have the end "sunk in" a little more than others, which could tend to bring the small cog out farther, but I still don't think that's it. I wonder if it's the shape of the stay?

Pictures would help, maybe not me, but one of the folks who know what they're doing. I just stick stuff on bikes and usually, it works.

It's a mystery to me. It is an HG freewheel. There's nothing funny about the geometry of the frame, nor the spacing of the dropouts. I still have the freewheel as I intend to diagnose this at some point, but figuring out this puzzle went to the backburner when my daughter was born 7 months ago.

Oh ho! Lucky for me, I didn't attend a quaint technical school at C-Springs, but rather am another proud liberal arts grad with a degree in Psychology from the University of Kansas.

I may get around to taking pictures someday. It is a mystery to me, and I'm pretty proficient in LOTS of bicycle mechanical issues.

"Is SF really that high of a market?" Craigslist is a well used medium here. High prices melt down or get reposted until they are flagged into neverneverland. My "for sale" items, if priced right, go in 3-4 days, with maybe 5-10 inquires.

Sup guys, just got a centurion le mans for $20 at a garage sale.. Here are the pics of the bike. Does anyone know what year this was built? i'm guessing 86' 87'???, and is the head set 1" or 1 1/8th"? just want to ask and confirm

Following up on T-Mar's helpful advice...

The "FSD" on the old Mavic hub that I found was something around 33-34mm. In other words, too small for the 7 speed freewheel.

I've solved this little problem though. About 30 minutes ago I re-spaced the frame IAW Sheldon Brown's instructions...now running an 8 speed cassette on modern 105 hubs.

Off to C&V hell for sure...

OK, the paint job is 1988, but they were made in '87. The serial number on the bottom would say when it was made. The '88 Ironman came in the same scheme. I had a Lemans RS just like that, and have an Ironman with that paint scheme also. In 1989, they made it like that in blue.

The head set is 1" threaded, by Tange. Wheels would run 700c, and it should have Shimano Light action components, likely Exage brakes with SLR aero lever.

Good luck with that, it's Tange 2 frame is right up there, only about 2 oz heavier than the Tange 1, so it makes a good road bike.

riva, who was so much help getting me an Ironman Carbon frame set, has succumbed to the Centurifever. I'm sure he'll send pics when he can, but he picked up an '83 Elite for a pittance...

Now that we've got him cultified, we're on both coasts...heh heh,...nationwide.....

And I'm thinning my herd quite a bit...so anyone who had thoughts about one of mine, maybe drop me a note....

Man they put non-SS spokes on some pretty decent bikes, same story with the nishiki and specialized hanging up next to the elite. Oh well, mebbe I'll lace up my extra-medium V's for the elite.

Old lady made me hang everything up in the garage and get em all out of the house today. Guess buying the elite was the last straw. You know youve got problems when she comes home with a ten pack of hooks and it only gets the job half done.. ;)

That thing is going to be your prettiest bike.

I'm sure you're right, although that probably says less about this particular bike than it does the rest of my stable. :P First bike of mine that has a named tube set.. I'll compare the ride and see if its more than just hype.

Well, that happens. At least you've got a well-protected frame. :)
How did the lug work come out?

Your powdercoater put it on too thick. I powdercoated mine, and the serial number is perfectly legible, and the lug edges are still crisp.

He did a fine job of it...looks like paint, really.
