I love the STI (Brake plus Shift?) and modernized bikes. I have asked both my LBS's about this and they basically say they are unwilling to do the work. How hard is this to do? Also, I had a pretty hard crash (30 plus downhill) and wrecked the handlebars. Good time to shorted the stem to a new one and look into this project, as I LOVE MY IRONMAN! I would appreciate any links or specific info regarding parts lists/sizes as again, the LBS's are NOT into vintage steel. Pretty upsetting being pitched an S-WORKS when I have a piece of cycling history in their store, but I digress.

Happy Cycling, honk if you see me in Southeast Texas around the Lamar campuses.

I have to ask though, anyone who owns this paint scheme. Do you get 'yelled' or 'laughed' at for riding a pink and yellow bike? I do, it tears at my soul.

Also, you can't beat telling people "My shoes cost more than my bike man!"
Crashed this ride going 30+ downhill? OUCH! Have you had anyone check the integrity and alignment of the frame and fork since then?

Converting to brifters is not too hard. It's just a matter of finding the parts (levers, downtube cable stops, rear hub/wheel and cassette), then cold set (spreading) the rear triangles to 130mm if you wish to ride 8/9/10 speed with easier rear wheel removal.

which was manufactured in 1986 according the serial #

maybe they came out with the expert to sell the excess stock of frames

Hmmm, swayed I am not! Age is better. I suppose ebay is the normal way of gaining control of those space age bike parts? Is it fairly safe to assume 'most' modern bike parts *tiagra-ish* are still interchangeable? I can upgrade to 130 mm, keep the BB setup, RD FD, and brakes? Will my 105 groupset work with these newer parts or do I need specific sorts? Also, it feels as if it is a 'friction' shift *smooth pull as to clicks*.

Bike was a little banged up, and nobody has checked it out. Still got some nasty scabs 3 weeks later, but who's complaining? Did find the rear axle was broken DT side, and bent the skewer rod. Picked up the part from my 2nd favorite LBS for free, re-lubed and eyeballed it, rolls even better. They wanted me to upgrade to a modern wheel set rather than trying to replace a 1 dollar part...

Upgrading to modern will yield you a bike for the ages that can run with anything.

I believe it can be done.

The red and white one is actually an '86 with no designation of "Master" or "Expert". Didn't mean to mislead you. It is equipped with Shimano 600 like a Master, but they didn't have a Master and Expert until '87. As for the '85, it is actually a much more rare bike. Very few red and silver ones were made/survived.

Well, the one I was on to, did not come off. The seller had a starting bid of $280, and nobody bidded. I told him to relist it with a BIN and "best offer"..He declined. I wasn't going to go over $250 or $275 to my door. Also, on the one above, I put a watch on it.. Will see what happens.

Hello all, I am new to this site. I picked up a 85 ironman for $150 including shipping off of ebay last fall. It had a bad picture and was dirty so it didn't get alot of bid action.(thank you people) Any how it cleaned up nicely. I sold the campy pedals for $50 and spent it on bar tape tires and tubes. I cant tell you all how happy I am with this bike. It has all shimano 600 componets except the break levers are 105slx, it has a light silver paint job with a dark gray head tube. I took it on a 26mi ride on Sunday and averaged 17.6mph and had no trouble staying with my friends on their modern carbon and alumnum bikes. I've been more of a mt biker and just started road biking. The bike is at the bike shop geting serviced now so I will post the serial # and try to link some pics when I get it back. I can tell you that the serial # starts with a KG***** which by looking over this forum is not common. I did find a bike on velo space that had the same color and serial # prefix. ILove this bike. You rollin Tom... IMO, the Centurion bike are SLEEPERS..I am on my 88 Ironman Expert today, and let me tell you..This thing rides..

I am looking at a 85 just like yours.. Will see if I pull the trigger on it..

In the meantime enjoy.. Oh, BTW, I paid $90 for mine, and just changed the tires for looks.. My bike is cheery.. Here is a picture from just a couple hours ago, and as soon as I finish typing this, I am getting on it for the sweet ride home.. The long way too...

I've got two red and white Centurion Ironman Dave Scotts, one s/n N5P532#, the other N6A783#. Both with original-looking derailleurs, shifters, stem, bars, brakes, levers, hoods. One with what I think were the original wheels as well.

Robbie you seem to be the guru around here. Do you all have any Info on KG serial numbers. Im picking the bike up today and i'll get the full serial # for the data base. also is there an updated list of serial numbers other than on post #65ish, iwould be interested in seeing it if I could. The color is opposite of most of the 85s Iv'e seen the dark gray main frame with the silver seat and head tube seem to be more common. Its a great bike as it has removed about 15lbs off of me this spring. I would like to put a brooks B17 on it, but can't decide to go with the honey or the black.

Last week I was given an '87 Ironman in exchange for some labor performed for a friend.
One ride and I decided it was a keeper, the only thing I changed was the cranks. One of
my rides starts out with a 595 foot rise in elevation in the the first 2.25 miles so I put a set of Stronglight cranks on with 50/38 gearing, I climbed the hill with ease.
The only thing it needs now is new bartape.

BURNED! That's twice now.....

Burn 1-1987 "Miami Vice" Expert w/o wheels or brake levers, $150 plus shipping, measured twice and reported as a 56cm. Arrived a 58cm.....

Burn 2-1989 Master, complete, looked a little rough, $90 on local CL. Said "22 inches," or 56cm. l committed, and a friend picked it up. 58cm....

"no mas."

EDIT: now building it back up for Coleman.

measuring seat tube length is kinda hard to do accurately when the bike is fully assembled.. plus people don't always know where to measure from and/or don't specify center to center/center to top. does suck when you got them to measure it twice and they still messed up

btw feel free to send any 58cm ironmen over to me

i took my ironman master out last night to try out different stem lengths and handlebar widths and i lurve it more and more each time i ride it. it feels so "aggressive".. i think i've decided on a stem and handlebars, and i have matching wheels and tires now.. i'm pretty stoked about this build, can't wait to finish it up and post some pix
