GT All Terra?

My neighbor has a blue GT All-Terra bike for sale. It seems in decent enough condition to make a nice ride, except the rear derailer(sp?) is busted.

I was wondering how much it would be worth in this condition and how much it would cost to fix. I think he wants $50 for the bike

Thanks:)

I've had one of those in my shop before. Sold it for $150. Excellent bike, bit on the heavy side, but great componentry. Double check that the fork is straight before you go for it.

Not sure if it's just the angle of the photo, but that second pic makes it look like one of the fork blades might be bent.

Looks like an entry level GT. The Altus drivetrain says it's not a serious mountain bike, but it should be functional. The frame's probably chromoly, so that's the strong suit of the bike. $50 sounds about right to me, maybe less with the rear der. mangled like that.

The derailluer repair cost could vary quite a bit. For me I'm lucky enough to have a lbs with a good selection of used parts at low prices, I could pick up a good used rear mech for $5 or so. Ask at your local shop if they have any used parts to dig through. If you get new a good quality piece will run around $25. Next can you install and adjust the new derailluer yourself? If not it's not hard to do and is a good skill to have. The Park Tool website should have a good photo tutorial on the subject. If you have a mechanic do it should be around $5-10.

Looks like low-end components, but if it's chromoly I'd buy it for $50. :)

Lower-end, maybe, but mind you, these '80s Shimano components (and Suntour of this era too) work quite well. My All Terra had Exage thumbshifts and derailers, and it worked beautifully.

Only drawback that I see here to yours is that the rings aren't bolted on, but built into the crankset - I've never been fond of these type cranksets.

That's true, I was mainly noticing the cranks. Plus he'd have to replace the rear derailleur anyway. :D At first I figured it had Rapidfire shifters (*push* *push*), but now that I look at the picture more closely, I can only see one lever on the backside of the handlebars. Yet I don't recall Shimano's lower end having Rapidfire Plus until 1993. Maybe someone else can see better than me. ;)

This model was three uup the line and originally retailed for 329-369. I wouldn't give more than 50-65 for one of these used.

thanks for the help everyone, i am going to look more closely at the forks later today, if they are ok i will probably buy it to fix it to get some experience
