vintage in competition
Hey everyone. I posted this question over in the tri forum, but still want to get some of your opinions. I am doing my first sprint tri this summer and am debating whether or not I should use my vintage trek (late 70s - good condition) in the competition. I only have that and a 2001 Schwinn Moab mtb. I don't want to spend the money on a new road bike yet, as I don't know how much I'll use it. Have any of you ridden your vintage bikes in competition? Thanks in advance for any input.

depends who you're reacing. yourself or everyone else? Lots of people enter the Triathlon here at my university with vintage roads and MTBs with slicks. I helped a friend overhaul his 91ish Miyata (12 speed light action SIS) for the tri. he was pleased with it. But I would say, Time yourself on the same course with both bikes. Whichever is faster right?

I ride my 12 spd 80's 3Rensho in training races all the time. Just be sure you have good gears and wheels and you'll be fine. Don't ride the MTB, this is a road race, not a mountain bike race. I see people all the time riding tri's with suspended mountain bikes, bouncing up and down on the upright bars and huge knobby tires and I say to myself, "What are they thinking?"

Particularly on a long distance ride or a triathlon, there is nothing wrong with a classic road bike, and it will serve you better than your mountain bike in this application.

I think it would be cool to stage a vintage bicycle race, in the spirit of the vintage sports car races that are held in various cities.
