Another Bianchi ID Help Thread
I've been looking for a bike for my dad recently and I came upon an 80's(?) era Bianchi that seems pretty nice and I was wondering if anybody could help me out with and ID. All the Bianchi stickers are intact but and model name stickers are prtty much nill. So for the parts list:
columbus slx tubing
araya 700c rims
suntour cyclone brakes
suntour cyclone "accushift" front & rear deraullieurs
sugino bars, bottom bracket and crankset
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks alot. Cheers

Bikes: 1959 Capo Modell Campagnolo; 1960 Capo Sieger (2); 1962 Carlton Franco Suisse; 1970 Peugeot UO-8; 1982 Bianchi Campione d'Italia; 1988 Schwinn Project KOM-10;
A serial number and pictures of the decals would help. Here's an Italian Campione d'Italia, from 1981.

I just bought a 91 Bianchi Project 7. On the bottom bracket shell, there's a serial number, and near that, is the number "7," which I'm assuming is the model designation. See if there's anything similar on the Bianchi you're interested in.

Assuming the Cyclone Accushift is original, we know it is 1987 or newer. In addition to John's request, take another look at the tubing decal and see if it states "tretubi", which means that only the main tubes are SLX.

After a little more research, it appears that 1987 was the only year for Cyclone AccuShift. I found reference to a 1987 Bianchi with Cyclone AS rear derailleur - the Campione d'Italia. However, the spec'd tubeset is Bianchi/Columbus II, which is well below SLX. The Campione was a mid range bicycle.
Typically, the late 1980s, Italian manufactured frames had a two section serial number. The first section consisted of a letter and number and the the second of four numbers. The serial number provided looks more like those found on the Japanese and Taiwanese frames.
So something isn't quite adding up. I would have expected a better group on a SLX frame, but perhaps the owner rebuilt it? However, the fact that the model name is missing would make me cautious. I'd definitely want to see photographs. If I could, I rip the BB out and check for the helical ridges, but that's impractical. Externally, the best indicator of the frame quality is probably the dropouts. Given the era and an SLX tubeset, I'd expect to see Campagnolo dropouts. What say you, John E.?
