WAG is a UO-8 from around 72. Sure the wheels are 26 inch? How about some pics?

Bikes: 1959 Capo Modell Campagnolo; 1960 Capo Sieger (2); 1962 Carlton Franco Suisse; 1970 Peugeot UO-8; 1982 Bianchi Campione d'Italia; 1988 Schwinn Project KOM-10;

It is definitely a UO-8. I'll bet the forks are half-chromed. An AO-8 would have low-flange hubs with wingnuts instead of QR skewers.

1972 UO-8 it is.

Unlike an automotive VIN, the serial number gives the year of manufacture (initial "2" and 7 digits = 1972), but not the model.

tx for the reply.am confused.if i am reading you right the ser no i have 2674373 would indicate that is was manufactured in 1972.right.
now the picture of the bike which i find at te following indicates that it might be a 1975 UO8.hence the confusion.which is which

The UO-8 did not change much during the early 1970s. By 1975, US Export versions were saddled with horrible Simplex stem shifters, but it appears that European models were not. Also, the European description in your link shows a triple chainring, which was not available in the US market. The decals on my 1970 UO-8 (see signature) and the 1975 in your link are virtually identical.
