Schwinn Sprint made in Japan. Henry Gauthier Seat
I am building a new bike. Got a free 59 CM Schwinn Sprint. Metallic Grey with White Schwinn on the down tube and Sprint in white on the seat stays. It had white font wording painted (not a decal) downb low on teh seat tube that said "Made in Japan for Schwinn, Chicago" and on both seat tube and down tube and fork were black decals worn out except for chromo. I think one of them said 412 or 420 as well.
On teh bottom of the BB is a number stamped into the steel: 68K. Nothing else.
Lugged steel frame. Light weight (relatively speaking) like my Reynolds 513 Holdsworth.
Steel rings and cheapo two-piece crank. Low-end sun tour components that were rusted badly,. yet zero rust on the frame or fork. No info on the side-pull brakes. They were aluminum alloy though.
I searched through the info here and found nothing that really helps.
Can you Schwinn Veterans help me understand more about this bike? I think it is going to be a smooth road bike.
The seat was picked out of the trash behind a bike store. Great shape but cracks in the black finish. Looks very similar to a Brookes. Same type of frame and adjustment mechanism but lower end rivets.
Name stamped in the leather is Henry Gauthier. I can also make out "croupon garanti" (a guaranty?) in a oval stamped in the leather as well. I think it wil l be a wonderful seat.
Any feedback from anyone please?
Thanks!
David.

David,
The Sprint was Schwinn's entry level road bike model for many years. Look for a light four-digit stamping in the headbadge. The last digit will be the last digit of the year of assembly (the first three will be the ordinal day of the year). You can also check the components for date codes.

Best of luck,
