pics pics pics! or at least a link to the auction. All I know is they are small production hand built frames... possibly north american.. not sure I knew one guy who had one with a full SR group.

One of the teenagers that I coached in the late 1880s had a Battaglin frameset. He liked it well enough that he kept it for the 4-7 years that he was associated with our club. I worked on it every so often and even took it for a couple of test rides. It was well constructed and based on the shorts rides, handled nicely.

However, that was an SL frame. You throw all comparisons out the window since you're getting a MAX tubeset. The only MAX frame that I'm familiar with was the Bianchi Proto. Great stuff for big, strong riders and criteriums or velodromes, but harsh for just about everywhere else. I hope you have very smooth roads where you live or can tolerate ultra stiff frames!

I have a Battaglin. Painted it red and run it as a fixed gear. It gets a lot of use and rides nicely. 57cm TT, quite zippy and good fun. I rode 120km wednesday, 155km thursday on it, mostly on gravel roads, over a mountain range and all I could complain about were my tendons...

I think it's columbus SL, uses Gipiemme frame fittings and seems solidly built. Italian BB threading and (originally) 126mm spacing.

looks like it could be a good one, but not enough info on the frame or the components other than the 105 brakes and Ukai rims, those probably not OEM. He says "super butted tubing", but what is that, exactly? I can *barely* make out what looks like a Columbus sticker...and seems to be all-chrome fork. Too bad he eBayed it before you could strike.

Bikes: Crap. The box is not big enough...

well it looks like a columbus sticker, anyway. I estimate $150 or so at close. The bloodsuckin' shipping charges are gonna keep the majority away, so if you live close enough to the bike, it may be a deal. Can't get thrilled about the parts, and I can't recall columbus being superbutted, either...

The last time I shipped a bike, it cost me $40 for the LBS to pack it, and $59 to ship it. YMMV, but $100 for shipping a bike is not bloodsucking, IMO (assuming he's not packing it himself).

okay. I always pack my own, and that is one of my little ways of paying it forward, I suppose. I don't charge for my labor. So I'm thinking, if that were me, I'd be making about $60 for the 20-30 minutes that I'm packing the bike...that just sounds like a lot.

Nonetheless, the people who regularly trade in bikes expect to see $40-$60 and a lot of them will be put off by $100. and the buyer is probably gonna get a better deal because of it.

What was the original asking price on CL, before he decided to go eBay?

It went for $209 - a pretty good deal for an SLX tubed bike. A few Noobs with low feedback got auction fever and started out-bidding each other with a few hours to go, or it could have gone for less. Being local, I was going to bid on it but it wasn't my size. And, the pics were lousy - I don't need to be bidding on a pig in a poke.

If he had taken advantage of eBay's gallery and bothered to describe it a bit better, he would probably have done much better.
