folding a spare tubular?

i've read a couple of conflicting things:

1) fold it in half so that half the base tape sticks to the other half of the base tape, and then fold it a few more times

2) roll it up so that the base tape doesn't touch anything sticky(but then i think the base tape must lay against the tire, so it seems like the tire would contaminate the glue with dirt).

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

I fold mine base to base, then fold in half twice.
It fits perfectly in a Jannd tubular tire bag.
I've seen the roll method but I too feel that it would
leave too much of the glue exposed to contamination.

Method 2 gives the "trick" roll up. It is very compact and you see two treads, side by side, peaking up from under the seat when strapped on with an old toe strap. The "cool" way to roll up the tire.

Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

I use method 1. I've never needed to see how well it works yet. (knock on wood)

Anyone got a picture of method 2? I'd like to see how its rolled.

Yes, the base tape does contact the tire, so just wipe off the tire before you roll it. Don't have pictures, but try this.
1. Lay the tire on a flat surface, leave it flat and push the tire together. You should see two legnths of tire in front of you. Twist each legnth of tire so the base tape is up (tread down).
2. The trick is to start folding from one end, but fold it up from the flat surface, back onto itself, into about 8 inch folds, holding the two legnths against each other as you go.

Hard to describe but if you end up with the tire folded so you see the tread lined up in two rows, you did it right.
