Can anybody tell me how to properly lubricate a Shimano 3CC (three-speed, coaster brake) hub on a 1985 Schwinn Collegiate? There's no oil port on the hub, but the freewheel ticks sound sharp and tinny.

Should I use oil, grease, or both for different areas?

Should the hub be disassembeld for lubrication, or can I just remove the actuator rod and squirt oil/grease in?

Is there any danger of contaminating the coaster brake shoes with lube?

Should there be some noticable play at the rim when the cones are properly adjusted (like on a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed)?

Any other information (e.g., cable adjustment, parts diagrams, etc.) that you could provide on this hub would be greatly appreciated.

If there is no oil hole, then you can lubricate the gears by squirting some light oil into the shift rod hole. You only need a few drops. If you put grease on the gears, the bike won't shift very well, especially when the weather cools off. The bearings however, do require grease. The coaster brake gets greased along with the bearings, but that requires a complete hub disassebly.
To adjust the shift rod, screw the bell crank all the way on, then back it off enough to line up with the cable. Connect the cable and adjust the tension so that the "N" is visible in the window with the shift lever in second gear.
