Should I keep it...
Or return it to the dumpster from which it came?
I found an old Japanese bike called a Lotus(Eclair?--I couldn't make out the lettering on the top tube) sitting rusting away next to a dumpster at Goodwill. Thinking that the frame might be a good choice to build up, I took it home.
The front forks look pretty well rusted, and there are some light bits of surface rust on the frame. The brakes were dia-compe as well as the levers. The shifters and front derailleur are Shimano Deore, the crank is a Shimano 600, and the rear derailleur is a Shimano Alivio. The bike seemed fairly light given its age, though, to be honest, I didn't have my main ride to compare it to. Is this bike/frame worth salvaging?

Almost any bike is worth salvaging to someone!

From the rust it looks like you'd have to replace so many of the components, but I think it would still be worth it. $100 into that bike in replacement parts could land you with a very nice bike. You could definately do better, but I wouldn't just toss it.

Death fork? Naaaah!!
I've put worse (FAR worse) bikes back in service....and ridden them as well.
If the bike is in the 53-56cm range, and the fork can't be salvaged, you can have the fork off my crushed Miyata 310. When my wife ran it over, she took out the rear triangle and seat tube-the fork is fine.

If you're anywhere near a college -- even a community college -- the bike is worth something to someone. Students around here WANT a lousy bike becuase it has to sit overnight chained to the fence next to their apartment and they don't want something that attracts theives. They also don't want something they will feel bad about losing if it does get stolen or hit or rusts. You might even be able to unload it without fixing it!
