I love it, just simply love it. :D

I'm not sure. I have the '66 Schwinn dealer catalog so I will see if I can figure it out from part numbers. It won't be till next week though. I'm off for a long cold weekend of racing(auto, not velo. I'm just part of the crew). I think they probably would have been Weinmanns, but I'm sure the red labeled ones had superceded the old engraved ones by then. I think 1963 was the last year for the engraved ones.

PastorBob,
I can certainly understand why you would put a triple on the bike, but I have to say that I was looking forward to seeing my old 144mm bcd Nouvo Record crank on it. I have your 151mm bcd crank installed on my '62 Paramount and it looks and rides great. Thanks again for the trade.

Just for the record, I am no stickler for originality(most of the time). I just didn't know if PastorBob was aware that the brakes weren't correct for the bike. I'm usually of the opinion that it's your bike, do with it whatever makes you the happiest!

Mike552 10-19-06 12:43 PM

I really like the downtube lettering... is that how the bike was originally made?
The color seems to work flawlessly for a high end bike made in the 60's. Congratulations on a beauty! What will you call her/him?

You will, you will. Bob bought a tripilizer inner ring for it.

As Kurt mentions, you will see it, just in a different configuration then when we traded. It's on there as I type, but instead of it being a double 52/42, it is now a triple set up 49/42/31. The freewheel is a Regina 6 speed, 13-32. Why the low gearing? Well, I'm a big guy, nearly 6' 2" at 240lbs--- and I live in the mountains. I have lots of steep climbs that for short distances exceed 10% grade. I've put a lot of time in the saddle this year and I am a better climber, but, at the end of 30-40 miler, the last hill I have to climb to get home is over 12% for about 1/2 mile. I love my low gearing! I'll post a picture of the crank after I go home. It does look different.

SpokesInMyPoop 10-19-06 03:04 PM

wow.... just, wow. I mean... wow.

wow.

very nice!

Pastor Bob-

That is one beautiful paint and pinstripe job. I'm sure you would say that it was worth the wait. If it were my bike, I'd use the Campy brakes, too. Many of these bikes were upgraded in more recent years. It looks as if your brakes are the older style with the flat release lever, which makes them older than the Campy brakes on my 72 Paramount.

I'm definitely impressed!

Informance!!! That's what my wife does with her Middle and High school choral music classes. It's kinda nice, really. they get up on stage and just show what they have learned, rather than deal with performance anxiety. Great strategy for early in the school year, like now.

Maybe they need a Vintage Bike Informance!

The frame is super! So this is the one you posted on previously, looking at rear spacing and cogset width? After so much great work, you really don't want to mess up the dropout paint with chain rub.

I've said it before, Pastor Bob, I LOVE that radiant coppertone! Man, that color on a bicycle is the '60's as far as I'm concerned. :)

Yes! Same frame I was working on back in June to fit and space the Campy High Flange hub before taking it to the LBS for a wheel build (which turned into a disaster as nothing was ever done---so in August I fetched the hubs and rims and brought them home, but that is another story!). So for now, I'm using "dump find" wheels.

Progress this morning and tonight: Phil Wood BB installed. Nuovo Record (triplized) crankset installed. FD & RD installed and cabled. Chain attached. Front Wheel mounted. Pictures taken! :D :D Enjoy!

Left to do tomorrow: brake cables, pedals, and test rides!

Little Darwin 10-19-06 07:30 PM

I hope that bike is as fun to ride as it is to look at! Sweet!!!

Just to pick a nit... it sure could use a different colored freewheel. :)

cudak888 10-19-06 07:34 PM

What a beaaaaaut, Bob!

The tripilized crankset and Rally derailer give it the perfect custom touch while still retaining a 100% true, vintage appearance.

One thing though - what became of the Record front derailer? The newfangled FD is the only thing that I can't get used to...

Tell me, what brand barcons are those? They look like Suntour rachets, but with silver ends.

What?! And change the originality factor? That's a Regina Oro - the same freewheel you would have got on a Paramount when new!

Well, if it is what they came with, I'll deal with it... I would asthetically prefer either dark like the chain or chrome... But, I don't want to mess with a classic. :)

Oh, you mean like the Suntour freewheel I used on my '61 coppertone Paramount?

(I know, cheap plug for my '61 ;) )

Nice work Bob. That bike is absolutely beautiful. You must be pleased with the outcome as you should be. As SpokesInMyPoop said, Wow!

It's a gold Regina Oro that cudak888 found for me in Miami. I have a Shimano 14-34 that I could use. It's a toss up just now.

I'm going to try it tomorrow. I picked up the Shimano FD for $15. I wanted to make certain I could handle the three chainrings. I doubt the Campy Record will work, not enough travel, but we'll see in the morning.

YES and NO. They are actually "Schwinn Approved" made by Suntour and yes they rachet.:D When I switched my Traveler from stem to down tube shifters I thought barends would be safer. On a frame this size it's a long reach to the down tube. This is compounded by the fact that my reach is slightly less than most guys with my height. I have a long torso but shorter extremities.

EDIT: And--- the seat height in the picture is way too high for me. It will be much lower.

bigwoo 10-19-06 07:58 PM

Wow!!!!!!!!!! Congrats!

cyclotoine 10-19-06 08:09 PM

Bob, recently it was debated (on the CR list i think) whether or not a record FD could handle a triple... many list members said they had no problems handling a triple with their NR FDs.

jbs 10-19-06 08:13 PM

I had a chrome 15 speed that I bought in '73. As well as a gold regina free wheel, it had a gold chain and weimann center pole brakes. I sold it the next year, after a transcontinental bike ride. I got what i payed for it. I thought I was SO smart!

Hey,Lil Darwin, I got it at Sicklers in WB, from the old man himself, at the shop by King's College back then.

John E 10-19-06 08:16 PM

I'm surprised Kurt likes it. :)

That frame is absolutely gorgeous, Pastor Bob!

49T outer chainring. Good man! (I am gearing Capo #2 49-45/14-26.) For several years, I ran 49-46/14-26, later 49-42/14-21, on Capo #0 (no longer of this world) in Los Angeles.

John,

As I said earlier, I LIKE and I NEED my low gears. I came up with this gearing basically by pure dumb luck. When I converted my Schwinn Traveler to a triple the one I found on ebay cheap was 50/42/34. I like the 50 so much better than the 52 and around here in the mountains. Before I found the triplizer and Scooper told me about Phil Wood BBs that could handle a triple I tried to run a more compact 50/38, but the small ring rubbed the chainstay. I know I'll top out fast on the descents, but that gives me a chance to rest--- and I LIKE my rest! :o

My '71 P15 Paramount tourer still has it's original Campag. Record front der. and it handles the Record 36/49/54 triple just fine. The Record front was the stock derailleur on the P15's for at least the early to mid seventies, probably longer.

Bob, I think the crank looks great on your bike. Congrats on the triplizer(sp?). They seem to be hard to come by used(maybe new also). Hope the pedals go in smoothly for you after the thread trouble you ran into.
