1989 Centurion Ironman info needed.
I just rescued from a neighbor's trashpile what I think (from posts in this forum) is a 1998 stock IronMan Dave Scott Expert. It needs some TLC, but it is in great shape except for a couple of real rusty spots in the frame. It has the Suntour GPX group and the frame is black.
I was wondering if anybody has detailed specs and measures on the bike. I am thinking the bike might need a new frame, and, I have no idea what BB measurements, head tube measurements, etc. were used at the time.
Thanks in advance.

89 Ironman info
I have an owner's manual for that model, but be aware that the '88 and '89 were about the same, and there is a carbon fiber model out there, too. The Expert has Suntour GPX, should have 7-speed cassette and decent wheels. If the frame's not shot, you can buy another one for $100 to $150 on the web, generally from a whole bike, which would be cheaper than sandblasting and painting, I'd think. Is it a "fade" or solid color(s)?

It's definitely a 1989, if it's Centurion with GPX. It sounds like you may not have have the tools or knowledge to replace the components, in which case it's going to get very expensive to pay an LBS to do it or buy the proper tools. Of course, the latter could always be considered an investment if you plan to get into bicycles.
However, I would not immediately dismiss a frame just because it has some rust spots. They can be eliminated and tuched-up which is by far the cheapest solution, unless they are very extensive. Do you have pics?

Owner's Manual if you need it
shoot me your e-mail, and I'll send you the owner's manual by .pdf if you want one.
By the way, a complete Suntour GPX Group set, new on eBay is $599, too steep.
At minimum, you should disassemble, clean, lubricate, and reassemble. You may want
a bike shop to re-pack the hubs and crank, then have them adjust everything.
If you don't want to get into that, T-Mar is absolutely correct, and knows way more than I do about this stuff. That said, if you decide to punt, I'm interested.
Complete Iron"men" are going for $100-$300 lately on eBay, depending on condition. There is a rare carbon fiber model out there for $500 w/no bids that I've seen. Most common is $200 range. I have seen a purple fade w/o wheels go for $200, but that was rare. Masters are rarer and bring more because of the Shimano 600 components.
I've been hard at this stuff for about 5 months, and it's a blast. My advice is to get yourself a stand, put the bike in it, and enjoy the trip.

I just picked up an all-black one with full GPX for $130. It's in good shape (especially considering it's almost as old as me), but I'm going to take it down to pieces and clean every bit of it. Anyhow, I'd also be interested in the pdf of the manual, RobbieTunes - I'll shoot you a pm with my email if you don't mind sending it along.

oh, yeah, all black w/the grey shiny Suntour GPX. Add a little black tape, get that seat up to snuff, and you've got a shadow moving down the road. The wheels should be pretty close to black (Araya's, most likely) and it would be a pretty picture. Post it when you're done.
