I have never owned a Trek, but isn't a "low end Trek" kind of like a "low end" BMW or Mercedes? In other words, all Treks are built to a high standard, but some are built even higher than others?

I would say yes for the older vintage treks (pre 84?). I have no idea about the new stuff.

Congrats on getting such a good road bike. That old Trek will serve you well, and give you many happy miles. As you will find out, the guys that frequent this forum are virtual 'experts' on older bikes, and will help you in short order with whatever questions you may have (including me).

Wow, I haven't been able to check with this thread for a couple of days and I must say...you folks here are quite friendly! Siu, Have fun with the Trek 460. Great to have another local C&V Trek owner around in the Bay Area. A road bike will give you a different perspective being on two wheels. Hopefully you'll like it vs. the MTB world.

I've got a vintage 1986 Trek 500 Tri Series bike I picked up this past summer in the Pewter/Black color scheme that was like new with original components, Reynolds 531 tubing with silver brazed lugs. It had a Touring bag on the handlebars, a mirror attached to the left brake grip and a rear rack when I found it. Hard to imagine why someone turned that little racing bike into a commuting/touring machine. Oh, the stories the C&V bikes could tell! What condition is the 460 in? Hoping Michigander kept it out of the snow and that it arrives in good shape. Nice looking bike from what is posted at the VintageTrek site.

I picked up lots of extra handlebar wrap and new Panaracer Stradius 700x23 tires (only paid $5 each for them!) at the SF Veloswap so if you need anything to get going for minimal cost let me know. I'll never use it all and it's headed for ebay otherwise. You can have what you need for what I paid for it. Have fun with it and make sure to post some pics when you get it.

Thank you TIOS for your very kind offer, I will let you know! This bike Michigander's dad bought for him used when he was 14 and he rode to and from his job at a bike shop. I'm guessing he kept it up because he knew what he was doing. The bike was never stored outside, indoors the whole time. He told me that the original wheels his brother used but cannot locate so he sent wheels from a Bianchi I think. He said that there are no dents but a few scratches BUT no rust. Has original tape and the saddle was replaced. He said that it should be good to go but I might want to change the cables because as he was packing it he noticed some fraying. Everything on it otherwise is original as far as he knows. Oh except for the pedals. Those are the metal "rat-trap" ones that are on the bike now.
