Schwinn Stem Size Question
One of my rides is a 83 Schwinn Voyageur 11.8. Very upright tourer posture, and this was great for riding the Mickelson trail in South Dakota. As a commuter however, it has earned the nickname "The Black Buffalo" for the hump it throws into my long torso everytime I try and get a lower position. The culprit, besides the inherant geometry, is the short stem length.
The trouble is the 7/8" stem standard for Schwinn's. Do Paramount owners have to deal with this? Regardless, finding a longer stem of equal quality to what's on the bike is difficult. I could always grab one of those I-beam looking things off a traveler, but I hate to downgrade a good bike. Where to find a longer 7/8" stem of good quality?

Do you mean the .833" size? If so the answer to your questions is: you don't. The only thing you can do is try to fine one on ebay or buy a crappy steel wald stem in that size.
I took a stem off of a super sports and it's sort of i-beam looking- aluminum with a flat top, the i-beam being the underside of it, and it solved my problem. If that's the sort of stem you're talking about that's the best you can do most likely. I've found .833 stems on ebay but long ones are very rare.

Damn, I was afraid of that. How do you spot them on ebay? Are people listing them as .83 or as schwinn?

.833 or search for schwinn stems. A 1" stem to .833 is a lot of material to remove. Have you done that successfully?
