Five Dollar Raleigh

I bought this five speed Sprite 27 for five Canadian dollars at a "St.Vincent DePaul Society" Bike sale.
All I've done is put new rubber on her. I like a brown bike.

Bikes: 1959 Capo Modell Campagnolo; 1960 Capo Sieger (2); 1962 Carlton Franco Suisse; 1970 Peugeot UO-8; 1982 Bianchi Campione d'Italia; 1988 Schwinn Project KOM-10;

That's a steal. The Pletscher rack alone is worth more than the price of admission.

Bikes: have about 30 bikes right now

thay always need new tires. I have found bikes in beautiful condition with tires that still have the ruber fringes on them like new but completely rotted out . Some people , thay put new tires on just to let the bike sit and rot for 20+ years. Nice find

Speaking of which - leveling it out a little bit would make it far more functional.

Great deal though!

The bike is basically untouched. I've still got to overhaul the BB, the headset, the hubs etc... I gots no time. Alas, I've had bad experiences with cottered cranks before. One of the cotter pins is still original with the red "R" on the bolt head. I'm going to wait and do it right. Also, the chain was caked with old motor oil and gunk. I've wiped it down quite well, just have to break it(the chain) and clean it proper. There ain't much wear on the running gear at all. The Brooks is busted, sadly. It's a low level Brooks, but still servicable.

I like it, I call it my Old Man bike.

Bikes: Many

If you are going to deal with cottered cranks, you may want to invest in a cotter press...

This is only one I have seen available, and has worked flawlessly the few times I have used it:

Nice bike for $5. Nice cruiser. Don't let anyone tell you they're slow. They may be heavy but once you get them rolling. They boogie. I ride a 1971 CCM 5-speed. Pretty well the equivalent of yours(no aluminum parts) and only the most serious of bikers pass me when I ride it(I have 25 CCMs). If you keep the tires pumped up good and hard(I like 50 PSI.)they roll easy. It's too bad Raleigh never figured out a good chainguard for the derailler gears. They made some sharp looking ones. Well anyway, good score. Keep Riding

Here's a pic of my hotrod...........
