Seeing all these post about polishing aluminum made me wonder if anybody has polished a bare steel frame to a shine and rides it that way. Maybe clearcoat for preventing rust? Anybody have pictures?

It doesn't work. Here in humid Atlanta, bare steel will start rusting in minutes. Clear coating will slow the rust down, but eventually (usually in a year or two) you start getting nasty looking rust patches under the clear coat.

953 is supposed to be a stainless alloy, it probably won't rust. I don't know what it looks like polished. I know regular stainless is very time consuming to polish. Maybe Ti would be better.

I think Cuda has polished steel, chrome, aluminum, boron, carbon fiber, plastic, his water bottles, his tires, the cat, anything within reach of his Dremel.

+1 to all he says, and unless you like hard work, best to let the mfgr. polish the Ti frames they sell you, it's even harder to hand polish than SS. Also, no way that anything carbon-steel will stay unrusted for more than a week in Eureka, you've got rain AND saltwater!

Yea, I know the saltwater would kill it here. I was just wondering if anybody had a bike like that somewhere.

I've seen one before...I think it was in the SSFG forum, but I'd have no idea where to find it now.

You sure it wasn't chromed? It's basically impossible to leave a bare/polished steel look, even with clear coat.

I have told people that clearcoat on bare steel won't hold up but know some people who were going to do it anyway, may look nice for a few months... There is a guy who had a fully chromed somec under the paint and stripped that. Even the unpolished chrome didn't hold up to what vancouver winters throw at a bike, it's rusting away.

Found it!

It belongs to forum member 12XU, so if you want to know how long it lasts you've got someone to ask...must be decent though, if he's riding around in the snow.

If you don't want to paint it you could use cold Gun Bluing, it a controlled rust process and leaves a shiny dark blue finish. Or you could use browning that is used on black powder guns, leaves a dark brown finish but won't shine as much as bluing.

+1 Our machine shop at work is in another building 10 yards from the main shop. I can resurface a brake drum or rotor, and if any rain gets on the machined surfaces on the way back to the shop, there will be rust spots everywhere rain drops touched by the time I get back inside.

Does the Chrome in Cro-Moly slow the rusting process ?

Brake rotors and drums are likely to be Iron which will rust faster.
