Raleigh Sports Help Please

I'm having a hard time dating this fine old "Coffee" Sports... I thought it had to be around 1975-6 but....

(I'm going to Surprise the little lady with a nice upgrade by giving her this old Sports after I clean it and then I guess I'll sell or list her '70 Crescent in the "For Trade" section.)

S/A AW 3 spd hub has "80 10" but obviousely there's no way this bike came out of Nottingham England in '80
EDIT: Or so I thought

Stamped (dead center, up top) on the back of the seat tube is "RPO 18308"

Lovely Brooks mattress saddle w/ all chrome finish on the carriage

Heron cutout (cottered) crank

"Raleigh" on downtube, "Raleigh Sports" on chainguard

"20-30 Balanced Steel Tubing" decal on seat post

I guess that what really has me stumped is the "80-10" on the S/A hub...

A coffee-colored lady's Sports was available in 1980, according to the catalog, and is shown with that vinyl mattress saddle. Rear reflector is one of those longish semi-rectangular types. What makes you think yours is a 70s model?

Wow, good to know!

You are correct, same elongated reflector in '76 as there is in '80. Same "FUGLY" spoke reflectors too...

It looks like an exact match to the one in my 1976 catalog...that's why the hub threw me off...

Were they still making them in Nottingham in '80 w/ lugwork and a heron cutout crank and all those nice features??

I don't think they quit building them completely until the very late 80's. But don't quote me on that I am going off of my somewhat warped memory

Here's the pic from the 1980 Raleigh catalog. That style of chainguard is likely different from your 1976, and the brake levers might be different as well (do you have the auto-adjusting type on your '76?).

nlerner,

You definately nailed it... I guess this thing IS actually a 1980 that just happens to have some very classic looking features....I cannot believe that they still had cottered cranks then

Once it's all cleaned up, I'll have to take it for a spin and compare it to the Crescent and take it from there based on which one "FEELS" better

Wow, I just picked up a his and hers pair of Sports today. I was going to post tomorrow and ask what year the bikes are. But that catalogue picture is exactly the same. Bigwoo, does yours have a Notingham emblem on the front? Also, does it have a "made in England" sticker on the top tube?

Oops, I take it back. The 1978 catalog also has "silver" and "coffee" as colors available for the Sport model.

Mine has the Nottingham head badge and Nottingham decal on the rear fender but, it's a step thru so there's no "Made in England" top tube decal...

Did you figure out your year's??

yep

Yep, that' s Oct. 1980. They were pretty similar all through the 70's and 80's.

No, bigwoo, I was real busy today riding both road and MTB (first time I tried two serious rides in one day). I'm going to try to take pictures during the week and post. But I'm lost when it comes to how old these two Sports are. BTW, my step through doesn't have the "made in England" sticker, only the men's model has it.

That is interesting...my wife's 1971 Colt with the ladies frame does have it, but the 1974 Ladies sports does not. I wonder if they dropped it along the way, or just on certain models?
