Cinelli Timeline

Okay, so I am only concerned with pre-1978 i.e. pre flying C logo.

Here is what I know:
1964 - Cinelli aluminum bars introduced.
1968 - Cinelli aluminum stem Mod. 1/A (A = aluminum) introduced.
1973 - Cinelli aluminum stem Mod. 1/R (R = Record) introduced.
1975 - Cinelli Mod. 1/A stem pinch bolt nut changed to allen nut fitting.
1978 - Cinelli Cino & C. sold to Antonio Columbo (owner of Columbus tubing and 3 ttt); logo changed to "Flying C" soon after.

here is what I want to know:

1. when did the logo on the bars change from being the shield on both side to the shield on one side and the model name on the other? Or was that just the difference between certain models?

I don't know the answer to your entire question, but I know the dual Flying C logo setup was used on bars that previously had the specific engraving of that bar model on the left side - I have Giro D'Italia bars that are examples of each variant.

I have a pair of steel Campione del Mondo bars from the the late 50s/early 60s with the shield on one side and the logo on the other. That would lead me to believe it depends on the model.

Hmm then those pars I lost out on by a couple dollars on ebay (sold for 143.50) really must have been criteriums.. they had no size markings but the cinellu knight/shield logo on both sides... I just scored a set of 66-42 campione del mondos in aluminum the exact same as yours iab. Going on the 1981 bar line-up on that site they may have been the only old logo bars available in a size greater than 40cm. Although they date to post 1975 (came with 1A stem with allen bolt) I assume they are no different from what they would have looked like in 1971 (which is the date I have decided on for my Corky restoration). I think I may never be able to get the period correct stem, I will likely endup using my old logo 1R which was introduced in 1973 as opposed to my old logo 1A (1975). trades anyone? BTW iab your cinellu is absolutely georgeous, period correct for 1971 has been expensive, I can't imagine what it cost for the open C parts on your bike.

Thank you very much. The parts were in no means inexpensive (I did get a couple of good deals though), but I have been in the workforce for 20+ years and probably have a little higher budget than your life as a student allows.

the switch to hex socket bar clamp bolt was before 1975.. iab's link lists it as around 1972..
(and it lists 1/a's introduction as c. 1960-3 ?)
i have stems from 1973/74 with the 6mm hex

giro d'italia and campione del mondo have their own logo to replace crest on one side

also, earlier (pre-1978 ?) bars i have seem to use a different grooving on the ferrule than later models;
3 seperate sections rather than one wide grooved area

You're right! The classic rendezvous site lists the dates I posted above.

Looks like we have a discrepancy, but since you have pre-75 stems with the allen bolt I am willing to go on that, plus it suits my purposes for restoration better.
