How Bad are AvA bars/stems?
Recently i got around to reading sheldon browns bit on old french bikes and i found this
"Many higher-quality French bicycles of the '70's came with AVA brand bars and stems. These have a reputation for failure, and should be replaced if the bike is to be ridden hard or fast.:"
This being my exact stem

So how bad are they really, like i ride my bike pretty hard/fast any chance these Things are gona buckle on me?

ACHTUNG, COLONEL KLINK!
The model you show there should hold up, but they are known to crack at the expander slot down at the binder area. Might help if you drill a little hole just larger then the slot, right at the top edge of the slot - reduces stress on the sharp edges.
I wouldn't trust AVA bars though - too thin, known to bend...then break.

I had those on my childhood Peugeot 10speed. The bike was ridden pretty hard for about 6 years, before it got stolen. The bike was ridden on tours along mountain passes, chacing each other around on gravel bush paths and commuting. Never even knew the stem was suppose to be weak and it never bent or broke.
