Austro-Daimler Starleicht update
I won this somewhat misidentified frame a couple of weeks ago on eBay, and after it came, subjected it to an uncharacteristic burst of activity. The pics are the auction pics, and then the bike as built up yesterday afternoon.
As delivered, it was full circa 1982 Dura Ace, but with hubs only, not fully-built wheels. In no particular order:
As delivered, it was full circa 1982 Dura Ace, but with hubs only, not fully-built wheels. In no particular order:
- I added the Shimano 600 crankset from parts on hand.
- Put on Suntour Superbe pedals, also from parts on hand.
- Changed the shifters (tip: the former owner had added those funky tube-top Suntour shifters, and with cable guides on the underside of the bottom bracket shell, the end result was the cables rubbing on the downtube ... conventional downtube shifters, as shown, work lots better).
- Put on a wheelset that I've had lying around, and which I've been dying to try out (Campy Record hubs laced to Campy Victory Strada tubular rims), after experiencing the joys of mounting tubulars for the first time. The Dura Ace hubs which came with the bike will give me an excuse to try wheel building later ..,
- Filched the well-aged Brooks Professional to put on a singlespeed build based on an old Italvega frame (also pictured, with saddle) and put on a circa-2000 San Marco Era saddle.

Nice bike! Yes, tubular tires are fast, but make sure you glued them properly.
That's a great-looking bike, and I like the shifter upgrade.

Thanks for the tip ... I haven't rolled off of the tires yet, so I probably did okay ...
And I forgot to mention that I retaped the bars with blue cloth taped, and then added four coats of shellac after I read up on the topic here. I'm pretty proud of how they came out if I do say so myself, even if somebody might sniff that they don't really look right with the aero brake levers ...
