Applying framesaver?

Is it possible to apply frame saver on a steel frame without taking off the majority the components (drivetrain) or does it need to be stripped?

It needs to be stripped otherwise it will gunk up your headset and bottom bracket bearings, and those areas especially need to be treated as they are vulnerable to rust.

Just to add to the above, here is the routine I've settled into when restoring vintage *steel* bikes. Oxalic acid shouldn't be used on aluminum:

*Strip down to bare frame and fork. No need to remove headset cups or bearing races.

*Soak frame and fork in oxalic acid solution to remove all traces of rust. (will not harm paint or most decals - paper backed decals the exception)

*Rinse f & f, then soak in solution of baking soda (some use Borax) to neutralize any left over acid.

*Use compressed air to thoroughly blow f & f dry.

*Spray Amsoil Heavy Duty Metal Protector into the f & f making sure to get the thin nozzle tip in all the small internal passages between tubes and all the drain holes in the stays.

*Slowly rotate f & f in all directions to allow protector to coat all internal surfaces before it has a chance to dry.

*Wipe excess protector off bearing cups and bottom bracket threads. Now go wax the outside of the frame with Meguires wax. Done!

Can the framesaver be used to stop rust in progress? In other words, is it necessary to remove all the interior rust? Or should it only be used on non-rusted or oxalic acid treated frames?

Good question. Here's what the original Framesaver has to say...

JP Weigle's Frame Saver
"Modern steel frames have thinner tubes and often develop internal rust problems. Left untreated, rust can rapidly degrade an expensive frame from the inside. Frame Saver is easy to apply and will protect your frame from internal rust. Simply spray into open tubes and let dry. Designed for steel or cro-moly bicycle frames but widely used for general rust inhibiting on road and marine equipment, yard machinery and household items. Quickly gets into enclosed areas and prevents rust from forming. Will not harm painted, clear coated, or bare metal finishes. A 4 ounce (132 ml) aerosol can provides 3 to 5 frame applications. Ideal for use on all old or new frames. Safe to apply over light rust. We recommend it as inexpensive insurance for all steel frames. Proudly made in the USA."
