When was this bike made?

Somebody in my apartment building tossed a bike that I rescued. It's a Huffy 10-Speed "Timber Creek" street bike with 26" fat tires and with non-SIS shifting and a single piece crank. Mostly everything ion it s US made by good old names like Wald. I'm placing it in the mid 1970's Any other guesses?

Bikes: 1984 Miyata 310, 1986 Schwinn Sierra, 1987 Ross Mt. Hood, 1988 Schwinn LeTour, 1988 Trek 400T, 1981 Fuji S12-1977 Univega Grand Rally, S LTD, 1973 Sears Free Spirit 531, 197? FW Evans

If it has fat mountain bike tires, then it is more likely from the 1980's, since that is when the MTB craze took off. I think Huffy has a serial number code for date of manufacture, but I don't know what it is. There also may be a date code stamped on the deraileur.

A couple of places to look for a date would be on the handlebar stem and the crank. Sometimes they are stamped with one. As well, if the bike is early to mid 80's and happened to be sold by Sears then sometimes they placed a date sticker on the lower part of the seatpost frame near the BB.

There is a date code system for Huffy bikes but the ONLY ones I have info about are from the 60's. Too early for this one but here is the info in case anyone needs it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

60'S Huffy

As well as the serial numbers on the frame, pull out the crank & crank bearings, and check the date. Both should be dated.

The first number indicates the year and the letter indicates the brand. The number of numbers after the letter represents the decade.

H indicated Huffy
G indicated Grants
S indicated Sears
F indicated Firestone

(Examples)

1965 Huffy Dragster 5Hxxxxxx
1966 Huffy Rail 6Hxxxxxxx
1967 Huffy Dragster 7Hxxxxxxx
1968 Huffy Rail 8Hxxxxxxx
1968 Huffy Rail 8Hxxxxxxx
1969 Huffy Rail 9Hxxxxxxx

The 1970's Huffys use a different sequence of numbers.
