My guess is the bike has held up better than the model. I certainly don't look much like I did in August of 71. I was 6 months old. Then again having known some beautiful women in their 50s, she may well have held up remarkably well. And as for which I'd rather take for a ride... Well I love bikes, but I prefer the company of women.

WOW! Dig those T&A cranks!

And as I can't see her left hand, it's hard to say WHAT she's holding onto.

Rad,

With your usual bikes and photos, I am a little disappointed here...

Where is the after picture???

Rad's bike has the Nervar crank on it, not a TA like the one on the cover. I think just the first year or two had the TA crank. Rad's bike looks like it has the 26" frame. I'm not sure but I think the one on the cover is a 24", definitely not a 22".

Actually, I think the ST Rad posted is a very early 1971 because my March '71 ST is all-orig and has the exact same crank. I think her T & A (Sorry, couldn't resist ) came a year or 2 later....

EDIT: Bob H's site shows the other one so I guess different options may have been available in different regions of the US ?
https://www.geocities.com/sldbconsume.../71ccpg09.html

I'd like Bob or Scooper's opinions on that

(Mine was purchased on the N side of Chicago in March of 1971 and the owner always kept it orig)

It's hard to tell from the photo in the '71 catalog, but it looks like a TA.
In the '72 catalog it's definitely a TA.
In the '73 catalog it's definitely a Nervar.

That said, I know that what was spec'd in the catalogs was not always accurate. These were the boom years and I imagine that components were switched around quite a bit depending on availability. I know I have heard others with '71 models make reference to the TA cranks on their bikes with the unusually wide 54/40 chainset.

It couldn't have come a year or 2 later based on the date of the cover...

Interesting. There is a note in the '71 catalog that says that it will not be available until March 1. Yours may be one of the first.

I'm pretty stoked about this post and this conversation as most of my buddies give me the "Boat anchor" grief when I roll it out. It's fillet brazed for goodnes sakes! And it happens to have what I describe as "a very warm" feel to it.
I completely disagree w/ them

Sierra, it must have been fairly early as the serial is "CG....."

Man would I love to see that "Future of marriage" article on the cover.....along with some other things....

Great find Reich 17

Re: JunkYardBikes question , Is the bike featured as the centerfold. I had to check. I reviewed the issue last night. There is no photos of yellow sports tourer inside. On pg 93,94&95 is a short article called the "Bike Boom" there is information on the Raleigh Twenty folder, Schwinn Super Sport (depected with a full chrome fork) and Bob Jackson tandem, Track, and Racing bicycles. The "pictures" of the bicycles are not photographs but drawings.

I believe that is actually ex Bond Girl, Jill St. John. Here is a recent picture of her. I think she has held up pretty well, although it looks like her bottom bracket is kind of sagging and her tires are getting a little low.
