help me identify this trek frame!

I found this trek frame on the balcony of my new flat, and am having trouble identifying it, and wether or not it's of any use. I initailly thought it was a 970 going off the drivetrain (Shimano Deore DX) and colour schemes, but there seems to be no discernable serial number on the bottom bracket casing (as suggested on vintage-trek.com). The rest of the bike seemed to be non trek - Tange forks (bent?) and a specialized chain ring. The reason I ask you guys is it looks over 10 years old, and you came highly recommended!

as a small bonus, you get a picture of my new kittens. hoorah!

Bikes: 1954 Holdsworth 3 speed, 1969 Bob Jackson, 1988 Miyata Twelve Hundred (retired), 1989 Schwinn Paramount, 2004 Santa Cruz Blur Classic, 2012 Specialized P3, 2013 Specialized Roubaix Expert Disc

We had one of those donated to our shop the other day. Ours says USA on the drive side. It has the same seatstay lugs and vertical drops. Have know other ideas about it though.

Definitely a Wisconsin-built, induction brazed Trek. I thought 970 when I saw it. I don't know what's going on with the serial number.

Yay...more bike guard cats. That's the way, start 'em young...

Simichrome for the derailleur.
