Why don't we all just admit it?
We're addicted to bikes.

Mine procreate in my bedroom.
No room elsewhere in my tiny flat.
I can always find a space for just one more though....

Interesting machine!
The front chain-wheel looks like the key to ID.

Bikecult has some good pages:

But does anyone know any more?

I figure this thread should help me out a little

I'm over in england for a while, and I'm looking to get hold of a bike. I'm quite taken with moultons, but any 3/4/5 would be good. I'm going to be staying in hampshire so I can get to london pretty easily. Are there any markets/bike shops I should check out in my search for a reasonably priced bike or should I just comb ebay?

I visited one bike shop earlier (recycled, at elephant and castle) which had a lot of older bikes, they had a few moultons, but for a three speed they wanted 225 pounds, for a 4 with front drum brake and a front rack 325. These were unrestored as well, ridiculous :/

1st: Don't pay silly prices, + you haven't obviously!
Then check ebay.co.uk if you can wait for the finish.

2nd: Tell us (in UK) more precisely what you are looking for.
I've got a 1980 Raleigh Superbe 3 speed for example.
In Gloucester.
No good for you maybe.

But there will be many private owners with similar machines just waiting for a buyer who wants what they have got.
Check it out/post it, is my advice.

The front fender was badly dented. I didn't take the time to fix it before fixing up the bike and it looked pretty cool without the fenders so I left them off. Rear brake has been added. I've since ordered alloy rims and new spokes and hubs to replace the heavier-than-lead steel wheels. Got decent deal on a new SA hub; the old one just wouldn't stay in any gear but third for any length of time. Probably just a clutch spring needs replacing but I've got things to do so I just bought a new hub. Bought the bike for $10 plus $50 for shipping. Primer, paint and clearcoat must've cost me $20. New shift cable, connector another $16. rim tape, tubes, tires another $50 or $60. New rims, spokes and hubs? ~$200. That vinyl Brooks saddle is okay but I know a new Brooks leather saddle would be just the ticket. Then my ride around the neighborhood or down to the nearest pub will be complete and it will have only cost me..........

Am I insane or what? Good thing I landed a new job three weeks ago.

roseskunk 11-08-07 07:50 PM

that's a nice bike bbattle, but the blue looks pretty good in the before, why did you paint her? me personally i like fenders, but that's me. and yeah, a brooks is the ticket. that's always the problem with these great deals... you get a great price on a bike then you start upgrading and before you know it... but what the hell, one less car, one more bike. great job!

My more interesting 3/4-speed lineup includes a 1949 Raleigh Clubman with a Sturmey FW (4-speed, wide range) hub, a 1950 Clubman with an FW hub, a 1951 Clubman with an AM (3-speed, medium range) hub, an early 50s Raleigh Record Ace set up with 700c wheels and an FM (4-speed, medium range) hub, and, for my workhorse commuter, a 1971 Raleigh Super Course with 27" wheels and an FW hub. I have another AM hub in the parts box waiting for the right project.

Probably;), but the orange machine looks so different and sweet.
Take chances and sometimes they come off.
This one did.

Here are a couple of pics of the '49 Clubman's lugs. I need to take some better ones of the '51.

*gasp*

I love it.

pitcanary 11-26-07 02:45 PM

Thanks Sammyboy. It looks a bit different doesn't it? I've since been told that it was black before it got painted orange. I'm just waiting on a proper Sturmey tandem gear cable, then it's just about done. Any joy with those bars?

Congrats!!
Both looking good.
The tandem looks particularly well with the light mudguards.
What does it ride like?

jwbnyc 11-26-07 05:21 PM

Thank you.
Viscount, we've not really given it a proper ride. I think it will take a few good journeys to get in sync. It needs new tyres as these are Dunlop war grades. A trifle past their best. I've been out on my own a couple of times. Although it's heavy for one, it's great fun. Tried riding from the back too a la Sheldon Brown. That's a bit hairy. The experience that is, not Mr Brown.

No, none. Where are you going for the tandem SA cable? I have a 3 speed tandem, and I had to bodge mine together from two cables. It works, but it's not pretty. The two are held together by a bolt, a nut, three regular washers and (I think) 4 shakeproof washers.

viscount 11-27-07 05:19 AM

Pitcanary.
Came across a Saxon tandem yesterday, or at least an ad for one, and it looks to be the same frame.
OK, it may well be a common frame, but it might be a lead.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1931-The-SAXON...QQcmdZViewItem

Same period anyway.

pitcanary 11-27-07 05:48 AM

Viscount, touche on the add. Thanks. £3.20? ooff, might have to put an offer in. I'll see what Saxon brings up on the old googleizer too.
Sammyboy, local bike shop. He's ordering it from Clarks. I think they are the only company still making them. Butterworth's my lbs has been there since the 30's. The grandson now runs it, in 25 years he's never been asked for a Sturmey tandem gear cable. I quite enjoyed that.
Just found this
http://www.tandems.co.uk/products/ac...em-gear-cable/

Sammyboy 11-27-07 07:44 AM

That's a standard barrell ferrule shifter cable - for downtube shifters. SA thumb shifters use a tee-tiny little ferrule. I thought about filing one of those down, but in the end I went for the bodge approach. I'll be interested to see if you manage to get one. That said, if all goes well on eBay this week, that bike might be getting a Nexus 7 instead, which would be a great deal more pleasing when it comes to any sort of hill.

Here's my Dad's 1953 Raleigh Sports after a bit of cleaning up. I rode it today for the first time since 1974.

Yes you're right. I'm now hoping that's not the one I've got on order. I'm sure it's a Sturmey copy. We shall see.
rbrsddn, that's very nice. First time in 33 years? That's quite a rest.

For Sturmey Archer trigger shifters, I make my own using modern stainless "slick" cables that have been drawn through a die to make them very smooth. Tandem length (2750mm) and triple length (3500mm) are readily available.

A short section of 3/32" brass tubing, available at hobby shops, can be silver brazed onto the cable with a propane torch. Or you could use solder (preferably silver bearing) and a soldering gun. I assume this would not work on teflon coated cable.
