Valuing a Nishiki

So we got a guy in the shop where i work, asking if we could sell his bike for him. Its a vintage (early 80s) Nishiki with suntour cyclone components in mint condition. Really mint.

Any ideas as to what its worth? I ask because my boss told him it wasn't worth anything, literally, and that we could give it away to someone for him, if he just wanted to get rid of it. I can't believe its worth nothing. Any ideas?

It depends on the model and the location of the bike, but I absolutely disagree that it is worth nothing.

At eBay, search on Nishiki, filter to the "Sporting Goods : Cycling" category, show completed items, and sort by price. Recently vintage Nishiki bikes have sold from $280 (+$60 s/h) down to $30 (+$100 s/h).

In most locales, a very good condition, rideable bike is worth at least $60 on Craigslist.

From the perspective of your boss, the potential profit (commission?) isn't worth the space in the shop and the time it would take to sell it.

But Rammer is right if the bike is sold independently.

I paid $170 for my first Nishiki, and it certainly didn't have Cyclone derailleurs. If I lived closer I'd probably try to buy it myself.

What model is it? Where are you located (hot or cool market)? Got photos?

I sold a mint Nishiki Olympic 12 (mid range model) for $195 on Craiglist, fwiw.

There were many models in the early 1980s that came with Cyclone; the Superbe, Competition, Continental, Seral and Medalist to name a few. The local market, condition and the model will influence the price, but pnding further info I'd guess you would be looking asomewhere between $100-$200.

Too bad you aren't closer to Northern California--spikyho would be happy to take it off your customer's hands .

What model is it? My International has Cyclone components. It's certainly worth a few bucks.

Nope, you should have ridden it until the frame broke. (Been there ... done that.)

I called about a Nishiki Olympic, 1973 vintage. 2 mens, 1 womens 10 speeds, asking $75.00 each. I haven't had time to go look, but they are in "Good shape" so he says.

Hope that helps,
Chris

Those would be the entry level bikes in the Nishiki lineup in 1973. They would have steel cottered crank sets.

Turns out it is a Nishiki International, in the brown tubing and creme lugs. As I mentioned, it has suntour cyclone components, and is a rather large frame. The guy who brought it in was probably 6'1" or so.

I'll measure the seat tube tomorrow, to get an exact size. If anyone is seriously interested, and local, let me know. I talked to my boss, and he said he didn't want it, so I could take it and sell it if I wanted.

What's local? I'm guessing from my TV research that OC is Orange County,CA and Google tells me IE is the "Inland Empire" of CA?

Yes indeed. I live during the school year in Irvine, CA, and the summer in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. The bike is in Rancho at the moment, but anywhere around the LA, OC, SB (San Bernardino) is local, relatively speaking.

I bought a rather tatty but functional International in San Diego for $60 back in March. I'd have paid $120 if it was mint.

I just paid $330 for a minty 1980 Windsor touring with Cyclone derailers. Part of the reason I bought it was to give the old Suntour a try. I'll let you know how I like it in a few weeks, as I just bought it on ebay last night.

I know that $330 may seem a lot, but I was thrilled. Also, I'll get to relive the childhood a bit as my dad used to have a Campy-equipped Windsor that I ended up wrecking as a teenager.

Sorry guys, party's over. I went into the shop today to take some pics, and my frickin boss had sold it. What worse, he sold it for $60 bucks! I did have a small consolation prize though, telling him it might have sold for $200 or more and watching his face...

ugh... sometimes he can be soooo frustrating.

I bet the guy who bought it rode off with a big grin on his face.

I know I would be! Perhaps your boss will pay more attention next time, eh? You need to nominate him for numbskull of the day .
