Bagged a Schwinn Superior

Picked it up for $50. 1977 model, fillet brazed 4130 cromoly, French hubs, French crankset (Nervar), Japanese derailleurs (Suntour GT), Japanese shifters (Shimano Unishift) and an Italian kickstand

Bare frame same as this just went on ebay for $200, wonder what a full bike would fetch. Questioning whether I should replace the original cloth bar tape (in surprisingly excellent condition) with modern cork.

Very, very nice. Great deal. If you replace the cloth tape and are planning on riding the bike, be sure to stow the original stuff someplace safe. Personally, I would leave the cloth tape on there. Sweet+

It's your bike do as you will. +1 on saving the cloth tape.

That was my frame on eBay. It was super large...if it was my size, I probably would have kept it. You got a good deal!

I'm wondering if the suicide brake levers and stem shifters are stock? I always thought it came with downtube shifters and no suicides like this bike:

Figured it might have been a C&Ver

Ya, I was browsing through the Schwinn databook and accordng to that you're right, should have downtube and no safety levers (although it is mentioned that ratcheting stem shifters were an option for extra expense). Not sure what happened along the way but someone could've messed with the parts or it could have been one of those snafus were Schwinn just had some extra parts lying around and they used what they had
The cable stop on the downtubes is marked as Huret also which I found peculiar

Probably, back in 1977-78, whoever first bought it from the Schwinn dealer, decided to "Make it my own," and asked the dealer to do those upgrades including the rack. What's surprising is that the dealer didn't suggest the Schwinn Approved Suntour barend shifters.

Most likely the same person who decided they could carry a watter bottle or a pump, but not both at the same time

Very nice bike; I'd ride that!

(waiting for an upper-tier Schwinn to appear at the dump.....)
