Queeestion on Firenze (sigh I know)

So I just recently moved to San Diego and had to leave my bike behind with a friend. I have been riding on and off for about seven years, bmx and street bikes. My uncle decided to give me an older bike that he had. Now... here is my real question. I do not have a vast knowledge base on bikes and bike maintenence however I have heard some not so good reviews on the bike that he gave me. I had never heard of this dreaded Firenze before, but from the descriptions of the one that was given away for free after purchase of tv or what have you, it does not sound like that one. Mine is a light mountian bike, the frame seems good, spokes rims and brakes are in working order, and it's in great shape for being ridden the amount that it had been. I am getting new tires, a tune up etc etc. Just wondering what the specifics were on the issues that the bike had. I don't want to be riding around on an unsafe bike but at the same time this was free.. ha ha. Seems that it has had that sort of history. Any suggestions on what can be done to make the bike not a peice of crap if it is indeed. The guy at the bike shop said it looked like a pretty solid bike, sooooooooo yeeeeeeea....

thanks for the input!

and sorry that I did an intro and a question in the same thing... I just had no clue where to post both!

I had one of those and I still have the water bottle that came with it. The giveaway mountain bike was called an MT-505. They were very heavy and had cheap components, but I don't think they were unsafe.
