Pinarello Help

Hey all.
I just got a 50cm Pinarello frame in a trade for a schwinn varsity.
the frame has been repainted and ive been trying to put a date and a model on it.
the dropouts are Pinarello. and the BB shell is stamped S682.
any ideas?

great freakin' trade. The bike looks to me to be a mid-80's trevisio or very similar. Look for the Pinarello catalogs at bulgier.net to help identify the exact model.

Do you really think a Pinarello is worth twice as much as a Varsity per pound?

I concur that it's a great frame, probably circa 1982, as later frames would have dual water bottle mounts and front derailleur mounts.

ok
today i used paint stripper to take of the paint. most of what i took of was the paint, and grey primer. but in the hard to reach joints and eyelets i was encountering pink paint almost like this

could this be the original colour or after market?? if so does anyone have a clear pic of the Pink Pinarello?

If you look at recent Pinarello threads, I posted up pics of a 1982 Treviso I have. With the exception of the GPT marking at the seat stay, yours looks almost identical to what I posted up.

alright last question. hopefully.
as i said i stripped teh paint last night, but when i took a look at the top tube i can see Shimano ghostly (printed?) on the tube. why would this be?? anyone know

geez. Colonel Mustard in the Library with a Pinarello frame!

I think that is the remains of an aftermarket Shimano sticker. They used to (mebbe still do) give 'em away at races. I would not have thought that it would have affected the steel in the frame, which certainly looks like what happened. Maybe the last time the frame was refinished they bead blasted it with the shimano stickers left on???

Looking at this bicycle, I just get the gut feel that it may be a mid level model. There is no apparent chrome. The bottom bracket cable routing tunnels are quite crude. The rear dropouts do not appear to have holes for adjusting screws. There are only two brake cable tunnels on the top tube.

To this end, I'd be doing a little closer examination of the frame, to determine if it might be a mid level model. What size seat post does it take? Is there any sign of a weld seam down the inside of the seat tube? If you have the fork, are there helical ridges inside the bottom of the steering column?

the dropouts have holes for the screws.
about the brake cable tunnels on top. i was confused, when people said it was a treviso the pics of Trevisos always showed 3 tunnels on top. well when i stripped the paint i found this.

it looks like someone took of the middle tunnel. it must have been professionally done, because it is perfectly smooth.

i see no chrome.
i have a 27.0 seatpost that falls through so i would guess that it takes 27.2.
i looked down the seat tube with a light and did not see a seem, but i also dont know exactly what i was looking for. just seemed like smooth tubing.
no, unfortunatly i dont have the original fork.

T-Mar,

The Treviso was Pinarello's value oriented mid line bike. Tubing during this period was Columbus Tretubi main triangle, stamped lugs and btm-bkt. The particular 1980 Treviso that I once owned featured a fully chromed ,Columbus SL fork with an investment cast crown and chromed Campagnolo rear dropouts with adjusters.Seatpost was a 27.2 and there were indeed 3 braze-on toptube brake cable guides.

nah. the clue reference because you uncovered an obscure clue to the history of the bike. You doin' the right things...

interesting to see the brazed over top tube cable routing. That was really not such a good idea, as water follows the cable into the top tube and rusts. that is bad when the tubing is as thin as a road bike. It also indicates a later '80's bike, because the earliest mainstream usage of through the top tube routing that I've seen is about '86 or so...

no, my bad. i was talking about the 3 brazed ON cable holders. the middle one looks to be drimmeled off.
no there is no routing inside the tubing. but on top.

My Treviso model has three top tube cable guides.

The decals showing up on your frame may have been placed there as the original Pinarello decals weren't clear coated, and peeled off if you looked at them funny.

I don't have a photo handy of the bottom bracket, but the derailleur cable guides are identical to the Treviso I have.

Lugwork is about of the same quality.

I agree with the above post that these were midrange bikes. Workmanship on the lugs was not near what a higher end bike reflects, the paint job on mine has a sag at the seat stay.

The only chrome on mine is at the fork crown.

just need to pick up the sticker pack and cut the steer tube.

not the blue i was hopeing for but i cant complain.

very cool. I dont know how i feel about the brake set up though. Freewheel with one cross lever doesn't quite jive fore me. I really dig the crank/chainwheel though.

You did great! that color is metallic? It looks very close to the metallics that Pinarello used in the '80's...they also had a candy blue over silver base coat that they called "Jolly Blue"...and a blue that was not metallic that they called, ah, Blue, I think.

i was actually kinda dissapointed with the paint, i thought it was a little light for the pinarello blue. but i have come to love it. yea its mettalic..well kinda. thanks though

What a great thread to stumble onto. Thursday morning walking the dogs I found a frame. A quick once over and I saw the panto'd 'P' on the fork crown and the cross cutouts on the lugs and brake bridge brazes and after wiping away some grime on the BB shell - BAM - Pinarello. I've got some citrus stripper sitting on it now (slower-acting than I expected). Can I get some pics up here and some help ID'ing? Also - I'm 6'3" and my smallest ride is a Cannondale SR-500 in a 59. Am I crazy to think I'll fit this Pinarello in 58?

Very excited and nice job with the restoration Garcia. Looking forward to the same.

Post some pictures on a new thread. There are already several going to help ID different models and years.
Paint scheme and serial #'s are helpful.
