A friend picked this up off the curb on trash day and gave it to me since it was a "ladies" bike...77 Schwinn Sportabout.

I didn't get this 1977 Sekai Superlite 5000 literally out of the dump, but from a freecycling posting by someone who was about to toss it. PS - this is my only vintage road bike, I'm crazy about it, and I've posted it repeatedly in various threads ... so if you're getting bored of seeing it and I should give it a rest, just let me know! |

Pastor Bob,
You the Man. Wait till spring for auction. yes I must go that route too ,CL has hit a screeching halt with my"Alley salvaged bikes " as my daughter called them.I was hangin out at a pretty rough intersection near a scrap yard in Chicago but the Coppers cracked down on the action.Puppa ( a term of endearment in the Latino sector.Means loosely Dad or Pop or Dude) got taken away in shackles, handcuffed, arrested. He had made a habit of selling whatever showed up to whomever showed up.It was a neat summer and I have a whole bunch of Bikes in various stages of disrepair. And I just bought a super Sport from Working bikes for the low low sum of 50.00 |
Man, I'm awfully jealous of some of these bikes on this thread. I need to start stalking the dumps in my area and getting a list of bulk trash days..I already have my daily drive bys of the Thrift Shops and Goodwill stores around me...I've had my hope restored that there are finds out there, you just need to keep your eyes open...One mans junk is another mans treasure..

The '71 Super Sport that's up for negotiations,
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...s/P1000413.jpg If it were 23" or under we'd have to talk. I need a Schwinn in the stable. Top |
Top, technically, in Schwinn talk, it's a 24 inch frame, so still a little big. My Paramount and Traveler are 25 inchers.

Wonderful finds all. I have done my share of bike rescues from the dump as well. Take a look at my photobucket album. The Trek 400 Elance came from CL for $10. I don't have all of them in here, but here's a few:

Sianelle,
where are the pictures of your Red Humber tip find? marty |
The Coppi clearly has a bent fork. I think you should throw it away. Just say where.

Dumpster find from nearly four years ago. 1980 Trek 414 which was missing wheels, brakes, shifters, and some other small bits.

She was going to be crushed into oblivion but I saw her and it knew it was true love. She's a 1962 Peugeot that I have overhauled and converted into a fixed gear and have now ridden 5000 km.
http://members.shaw.ca/feynn/biking/bridgette3.jpg She's a 1933 CCM that I found buried in the weeds down at the shop and if I had not snagged her she would also have been destined for the recyclers. I'll be restoring the paint and having things re-chromed over the winter. http://members.shaw.ca/feynn/biking/CCM1.jpg Here's my 1955 Peugeot PLX 10 Grande Tourisme (better pics will be coming soon) that I found on the street. http://members.shaw.ca/feynn/biking/PLX1.jpg My 1978 Superbe was also destined for the crusher as her tires were rotten and she was filthy but underneath...wow. http://members.shaw.ca/feynn/biking/Superbedone.JPG |

The life of this bike does include one trip to the dump---before I got hold of it.
