The fourth, the brown Sears 3-speed, I found on the side of Michigan Avenue near the Southfield Freeway exit ramp, just dumped in the tall weeds.

No kidding! I live near Michigan and Telegraph also, in the Ford Homes Historic District.
Thanks for the compliment on the Sears 3-speed! I felt like it fell into my lap. I still have to attach the new rear brake cable. It's too small for me, and unless my daughter shows interest in it, I'm selling it. |

When I went in tonight I found a 1957 CCM Rambler gentleman's coaster bike that had been donated... it is going to be a beautiful bike when I am done with it. I should have the little Peugeot all prettied up in no time and will post better pictures. |

Saved this gal a while ago, but didn't have a picture. She's all Shimano 105 with Biopace chainrings. Still needs a good cleaning, but she's ridable. Anyone know where I can get bar tape to match that pink? WHen I search for pink I keep getting a light girly pink. I want to match that dark pink.

My good friend PG, frequently lucks out on trash day picking up mid century modern furniture, including Heywood Wakefield pieces. Last night, on the way home from Pizza and Sandwich shop (by the way their pie is excellent, thin NJ style crust) I decided to cruise through a residential neighborhood rather than take the collector street. It gets dark here much earlier than Michigan so it's bit hard to make out what's curbside on trash night. Low and behold, I got a wee bit of PG's luck! Out at the curb against a pile of trash, a road bike frame caught my eye; it was too refined to be a Wallyworld type bike. Turned out it was a 1988 Schwinn Traveler lightweight. Small 19" lugged frame, made of True Temper double butted steel. The bike needs some work, but the price was right! From another house, a nice cast iron outdoor umbrella stand. I've overcome my qualms of trash picking, although I have the only bright red MINI in the neighborhood. Maybe I should treasure cruise in the ubiquitous white Expedition? But who cares, I am saving the planet by recycling, eh? I think success comes at night, because by the time the sanitary engineers come by in the morning, the professional pickers and scrappers have rolled through. What a way to pay for pizza! 1988 Schwinn Traveler in that condition, Now I hate frozen pizza.... You did well ! Are you sure it's a 19" frame, looks like my 87 traveler and it is a 54 cm or 21" ?

I have a lot of fun raiding the dump after it closes at least once every 2 weeks. 2 years ago it was so bad that within 5 minutes of the place being locked up at least 6-8 of us rats jumped out of the woods and had to compete in the scrap pile! now thay have a security guard come by every now and then. I got a little exercise :speedy:just last night when they showed up!:D I also got an aluminum Trek MTB after they left! Among my "greatest yields" was not a bicycle at all! people were refitting a large yacht I was working on, they just did not want to rebuild it- it was in working order and just needs to be serviced and painted it was a baby blakes and do aknowledge the price! |
This was given to me, instead of trash. A shop near ours has a nice gal who was gonna throw it away but heard I liked bikes. This is the condition it was given to me in!

Been looking for another restoration project and got this Miyata 914 ( 91-92 ? ) as a freebee. It was in the back of a guys shed and he just wanted the space! Needs cables, tires and tubes and I'll probably re-lace the wheels. I'm thinking red bar wrap and cable housings will look real sharp on this baby. |

Chuckk's Miyata Elevation 5000 is one of the most amazing rides I've seen lately. Can't beat the deal he got, and without having to haggle. :thumb:

A dump find in Southampton 10 years ago, cost a tenner. 24" frame was too big for me and I swapped this handsome machine for the '46 Hobbs of Barbican. (another Southampton dump find!)

Our county dump has a scrap metal area and I've found numerous bikes mixed in, even some decent ones, but picking is strictly forbidden. I have not yet seen the bike for which I'd risk the unspecified penalty.
I found an old J.C. Higgins 3-speed with a FREE sign on it in an alley with yard sale leftovers. Fixed it up for a neighbor's kid. Also found others, I'm sure, but have forgotten what they might have been. I'd like to find more but don't really have the space for them or the time to devote to fixing unless there's someone waiting for it. These days a cheap/free bike is a hassle unless it's my size and I want it or can give it to someone immediately. Back in my shop days I got this little Flandria when a lady chose not to pay to have it fixed up for a grandchild and accepted my $20 offer. We lived in the city until a few years ago and I loved cruising the alleys for stuff that got thrown out. I now recall a couple more things I found; a Baby Jogger Twinner that went to my niece for use with her two kids, two different bike trailers, and a Schwinn Mirada that went to the same niece. My best hope at this new place is to volunteer for the annual neighborhood clean-out pickup, when I have a chance to be first for the discarded goodies.
