Bikes: Junk, that is why I am here. :-)

1949 Shelby

Here is the bike I just finished as a Christmas gift for my step-mother. It is her bike from when she was a little girl.

Great job! I love those old bikes!

Forgot chain guard

Here is a picture with the chain guard in place. I forgot that it had one, so I cleaned it up as best I could and put it on the bike.

I like that chainring. The red and white is very nice also.

That is close to the original colors as I could guess from looking at old pictures and after wet sanding the rust off of the paint. It is supposed to be a darker red to maroon, but it really looks more red. I should have put it over a dark primer instead of the white.

What a great Christmas present! I'm glad you put the chaingaurd back on, because it just completes the package perfectly. I bet it rides like a big comfy marshmallow.

This is a nothing special bike, and I didn't go into any great detail. I just made it so she could ride it if she wants to. I really knew I was tired when I was putting it together, but I can't believe I forgot the chain guard. Maybe some more sleep would have been a good thing.

What is the deflection supposed to be?

I used 1" in my original setting, but then I took things apart again to repaint and then reassemble. I may not have put it back to the same setting. I thought I checked the deflection at 1", but since I forgot the guard, I may not have checked the deflection.

No need to measure deflection. Just tension it until there is no sag. It will work fine as is too, minor issue really

I am used to dirt bikes and motorcycles with suspension travel, so you need to have deflection. When I see the bike again, as I have already delivered it to a different location, I will move the adjusters enough to straighten it out and lock everything down again. I doubt she ever rides it, but you never know.
