Spindle length critical?

I am in the market for a BB for my Shogun build. The length of the spindle I was using is 120mm with
a 68mm BB lug. There seems to be a shortage of reasonably priced BB in the 120mm size. Most of the ones
I've seen are 113 or 115. Are the longer spindles becoming scarce or what? is a shorter length okay, and better for the chain line or something? I keep wondering if the same problem will rear it's ugly head like the Voyageur. The first one they installed on that bike had the inner chain ring hitting the Chain stay. The next one that they wouldn't change left the inner ring 1/8" away from the stay. I would like to use the correct length and hopefully get out under $40. ,,,,BD

Bikes: IRO Angus; Casati Gold Line; Redline 925; '72 Schwinn Olympic Paramount

The basic Shimano cartridge BBs (around $25) come in 118, and maybe even 121. Either one should work for you.

Guess I will hit the LBS again. I just won't allow them to install anything less than 118. What model of Shimano is it? I was shopping Nashbar, and they showed many lengths but none in stock.,,,,BD

I don't remember the model number, I've always called it "the cheap one."
