A couple notes for you here.

I have it from Sheldon Brown, that the correct pronunciation for the Raleigh bicycle Superbe, is as Charles Wahl suggests. Now the Japanese may not pronounce it the same as the folks at Raleigh, but I'd go with that until someone corrects me. :)

I don't think you can go by what I paid. Mine was $75.00 from CraigsList. The seller was kind of out in the sticks, and he didn't have the right rear derailleur for it on the bike (I brought him a proper MTB derailleur to put on his wife's bike so I could get the Dura Ace RD.

He had no idea what the model of bike was - and neither did I at that point. He thought, and I concurred then, that the primary value in the bike was the stuff on it. The bike had already been refinished, and was not refinished very well. There was only some light surface rust on the fork chrome, but whoever painted it didn't even bother to remove the bottom bracket first.

I got mine re-re-painted by Dr. Deltron (I won his contest, and it's a lovely deep purple candy now). I'm building it up with up 9 speed cassette. I've put 126mm axles on bikes spaced for 120mm before with no issues at all. Going from 126 to 130 is no big deal.

Go see this guy before it's gone. See if you can test ride it. I think $300 is kind of high. I thnk the one I bought was probably worth about double what a paid. This one - $225 - $250 would sound like a fair deal if it's pretty much ready to ride. Maybe a little more if it's in very nice shape. Bear in mind that I'm used to Harrisburg prices - which aren't Philly prices. He might well get $300.00 for it there.

Good luck. I'm about to sell off my Bob Jackson because I'm replacing it with the 760. :D

The bike is a worthy replacement for a Bob Jackson, but it is not worth $300?

While it'd be an awesome project to upgrade the bike to 10 speed 105 parts, I'm a little hesitant to put that much money into something right now.
Then again, I doubt I'll find all the parts for a similar price anytime in the near future.
There shouldn't be a problem for compatibility between the superbe crank and the 105 front derailleur will there.
Which parts are compatible old vs. new and vice versa. Just trying to get a better guage of compatibility.
Thanks again!

(I think I'm going to go check out the bike tomorrow!)

It'd be 300 bucks for the 105 stuff, and I don't have a spare modern rear wheel lying around. Besides, I'd be using this bike as a campus bike for a while, sharing the duty with my mtb in bad weather. So it's not sensible to make it a target with new 105 stuff just yet. Maybe I should get the 105 stuff and hold onto it for a while. Hmmm...

He came down to about 280. I'll show up with 250 with some extra in the car and see what happens. I have to drive about an hour and 40 minutes round trip for it so hopefully that cost will be factored in or something.

I'm really hoping that it fits.

It's mostly a matter of perception. If all were fair in the world, the Trek 760 ought to bring considerably more than $300.00 - but trying to sell it on CL for what it ought to be worth would leave the bike in the hands of the seller.

The reason I'm letting it replace my Bob Jackson is because I have come to accept that I'm not a racer - even though I do like to push myself (probably too often). I'm interested in having a bike for occasional "go-fast" bouts, but my main emphasis will be on riding longer distances. The Bob Jackson handles magnificently, but it isn't the geometry I want for longer rides. The Trek is going to be plenty good enough for me for those shorter rides, plus I have no qualms about fitting it out with Campagnolo 9 speed equipment (doing that to the Bob Jackson would seem sacrilege). The money I get from selling the Bob Jackson is getting invested into a new Surly Long Haul Trucker - which although neither Vintage nor lugged, is a steel framed bicycle that will meet my long distance riding requirements very nicely.

The Trek is quite possibly not the equal of the Bob Jackson, but that doesn't especially concern me. It will still suit me well enough. But let's say that for argument's sake that the Trek is as good as the Bob Jackson (I do know that the Trek frame is lighter). The key point is not how good the bike is, but how good the market thinks the bike is, and what people are willing to pay for it. At least now, people are going to pay more for a Bob Jackson.

He's an hour away, I would totally call and have him meet me halfway or something, other than the fact that I'm not sure it's a fit and I wouldn't buy a bike without trying it out a bunch.

Wish me luck for tomorrow y'all :-)

I hope it fits man, and that you get if for a price you feel good about. And as far as the rear spacing goes, the frame I got from divineAndbright was listed as 126 but my 130 Dura Ace slips right in no problem.

Take your time with the pictures - nothing makes a Christmas holiday like East Hill being driven to distraction. :roflmao:

Maybe I'll start a new thread with them then :-)

I took a few already, then I'll ask for people to tell me which views they want so I can do that too :-)

My favorite view is always the one hanging from hooks from the garage ceiling.

Haha, unfortunately I don't have that setup available.

Congrats on the new bike. Cant wait to see it. Did you decide what you were going to do about the drivetrain?
