Well I am starting to work on this free Centurion Lemans Rs 1987 - spent about two hours cleaning so far. Bike not in to bad of condition, no rust and decals in place, although lots of rubs through to primer. Touch up paint is a question for a later date.

* Headset is steel is sort of rusty although it smooth - what diameter is it and what a reasonable priced replacement
'* Same for bottom bracket - I assume it's square what length shimano replacement - anything I should I know before replacing

* Trying to figure out if it has a broken axel - while greasing rear quick release
the two piiece of the axel came apart wierd - I assume readily available some where. Although freewheel appears almost new it's shimano and uses a pin tool for removal versus the tools I use on Suntour Winner Pro's

FWIW, my '83 Centurion Pro Tour uses an ISO headset (30.2mm headset cups). The crown race ID is 27.0 mm. I would measure or check the fit with parts that you know are a certain size before ordering anything.

I'm rebuilding an old Centurion, and I was thinking about replacing the headset for the same reason. It still turned smooth, but the steel caps were rust spotted pretty extensively.

I hadn't considered that it may be a JIS headset. I don't think my measuring tape will accurately distinguish .6mm difference for me with any reliability. When you figure out which it is post it here, if you please.

I understand the difference betweeen ISO and JIS. But some are "mixed," like on my Centurion. Even if you can't find a headset that comes that way, 27.0 crown races are readily available-

The Tange Levin are nice headsets with a fairly low stack height, and they are inexpensive. I have one on my Palo Alto, and it is smooth and trouble-free.

You might want to give your cups a soaking in a mild Oxalic Acid solution before you go through the trouble of buying/replacing them. I've had excellent results removing rust doing this, and many times parts that looked to be beyond salvage cleaned up bright and shiny.

I got the chrome Tange Levin from bike tools. It's a really nice headset for the money. I found it to be pretty sensitive to race adjustment. I had to leave the top race a little loose, to keep it from binding once the locknut was tightened. Once I got it just right, it's tight and very smooth. I need a few more of them for the various bikes I'm working on at the moment.,,,,BD

I got the Performance Tool digital LCD from where I work. I got a good discount, but list is still reasonable. It does SAE and metric. I still can't believe how often I use it. Nothing like KNOWING what size to order instead of guessing. No more dragging complete bikes to the LBS for a seatpost.,,,,BD
