Woodrup pic - help! You can't ship a bike like that!

The seller has just sent me a picture of the Woodrup I've bought. Shock! Horror! He's going to send it like THAT?? From London to Tokyo? Is he joking?
https://www.flickr.com/photos/22983673@N02/2214807751/

Luckily, I asked him to wait before sending it for me to check around for a way cheaper than the £190 ParcelForce is quoting. So far, I've had 2 quotes, both almost £300.

Has anyone here ever sent an old bike to the US or Asia? How did you do it? I've searched on the internet for a company I could have the bike sent to for packing and shipping but haven't had any luck. Is there anyone here, and in the UK, who'd do a good job of packing the bike?

If I can't find another way, all I can think of doing is asking the seller to send the bike in 2 separate boxes, one with the group set and wheels and the other with the frame and forks with the dropouts and fork ends braced with some wood dowling or bolts of a suitable length.

I've not sent any bikes, but I have received some. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that Woodrup. Besides being scratched, it probably will be bent. He didn't chock the drops and I'll bet he didn't chock the fork. That will result in a bent stay or fork. For a hand made, limited in number Woodrup, you might want to pay to have a bike shop pack it.

I don't know if he lives near London, but Stapfam is a very loyal BF member in the UK who will help if he can. You might want to contact him. He can usually be found on the fifty+ forum or the mountain bike forum.

Yeah, it probably would be safer just to wrap a box around the bike as a whole unit ...

Actually, it's not mine. Big-Time-Sting-Ray-Collector John Cellini owns that one. I couldn't even afford that mirror!

Parcel 2 Go is about the cheapest out of the UK. https://www.parcel2go.com/

A frame only to the US is about $150 and to Japan, $175. So an entire bike will be more. You could also try Bax but I'm told they are kind of a pain in the ass.

Nope, one of many accessories you could get for your Sting-Ray. You can still get one if you need it ...

BWAHAHAHAHA.... I've got two of those Mirrors. One on each Suburban.

But, they don't say Stingray on them...so they are probabaly worth about $5 each.

So, if I'd gone for all the goodies, it would have cost almost $70 additional *?

*not counting installation costs

Thanks iab. Problem isn't shipping though, it's packing. The guy got a quote from ParcelForce for £190, which isn't bad considering Parcel to Go, for example, wants £224, and which is less than some quotes I've been getting for just shipping. It's a big packing problem

Tell him to consider shipping the wheelset separately, to provide more room for padding inside the bike box.

Shipping damage is a scary prospect, and there are ample horror stories to be found right here on BF.

Dawes-man - if you happen to know someone flying BA from London to Tokyo, ask them to take it as checked baggage. BA doesn't charge for sporting goods, including bikes.

John,

Thanks for the suggestion. It got me thinking and I came up with a great solution. Mercian are charging me £95 to ship the Mercian frameset to me, which is a lot less than the £190 it was going to cost to send the Woodrup.

I'd like to have the Woodrup frame checked anyway so I'm having the seller send me the wheels and parts directly and having Mercian pick the frame set up from the seller and then send it to me after checking. I reckon it can't cost that much to send the wheels and parts.

Problem solved. Thanks for planting the idea!
