"S" is for "Schwinn", not "Simplex" my friend, most likely off a Varsity or one of those other tanks from around the same period.

yes i have seen some of those but the 'S" on the shifter is totally different that is why i thought they might be something other than shwinn.

They are both Schwinn, probably early and late production, or vice versa. I have seen the same stylized "S" of the first picture on the Schwinn branded GB stems on Sports Tourers and Super Sports.

Perhaps you're right. I just saw the oversized, ugly, clunky shifter with an "S" and Schwinn immediately came to mind.

Yup, Twin Stiks, they were called. They were introduced in 1967 and immediately became standard on the Varsinentals, Super Sports, and Suburbans, and optional on the Paramounts.
