There's quite a few Alpina Unos on Craigslist, if that's what it is... with quite a price range.

https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/bik/552940874.html (cheap and big!)

It is really cool with that ornate front fork...

I honestly think these early MTBs are really undervalued right now.

Unless that one has some special appeal (I'm fairly ignorant of vintage mtb's), it seems a little on the high side to me. I just sold a couple of Univega's in that market. The really, really clean one (made out of Tange Prestige) only fetched $100 after sitting on CL for a few days. The lesser quality but still clean Alpina only brought in $80, after a week of being listed and with only one respondent. And both of mine were clean and in tip-top shape - that one needs tires and a saddle as well as a cleaning/rebuild, at least.

Very sturdy, nice riding bikes, but they don't seem to be worth a whole lot.

there have been a few nice vintage mountain bikes on c l lately. An original 83 stumpjumper, an 83 cyclepro and that univega. All great bikes and all undervalued. One mountain biking comes back into vogue the way roadbiking has. These will increase in value. You need to live on a place with mountains to really appreciate a MtN bike. I'm not too far from that bike and would be happy to check it out for you

what should I be looking for model wise then? craigslist adds are pretty hard to decipher sometimes (which is usually when you get something good for cheap too)

I would love a high quality preferably lugged XL mtn bike, but I will admit I do not know that much about them.

I agree with g-funk it's just a matter of time before these early MTBs start to become desirable. There are not enough MTB vintage enthusiast to drive the prices up, yet. But there will be. Clunkers is the tip of the iceburg for the comeback.

I really don't know what a fair price is for an Alpina Uno, but I won an e-bay auction for one this week, retrieved it from the seller yesterday, finding it to be in much better condition than I anticipated. My winning bid was $22.50! I consider myself to be very fortunate to acquire such a fine bike for so little money. I'll try to post some photos after I get it cleaned up.

Bikes: IRO Mark V, Karate Monkey half fat, Trek 620 IGH, Cannondale 26/24 MTB, Amp Research B3, and more.

MTB certainly lag behind road bikes for desireability right now. I suspect because of two simple reasons: they are not as old, and they have not been co-opted by the fixy/hipster crowd.

But still, its hard to find a nice lugged one. I have bought a number of old MTB's and frames in the last few years, and while I have a handful of nice ones, I only have run into a couple of lugged ones.

You lucked out that that was a "local pick up only" I saw that one, and would have bid on it for sure!

epicurean, you're absolutely correct. Had it not been "local pickup only" I think a lot more interest would have been shown. After watching a lot of bikes go for more money than I was able to spend, I started searching by location and then focusing on "local pick up only" auctions. Once I had done a little research, and had assured myself that a Univega was something I was interested in, I thought I'd have a good shot at getting it at a price I could do. Though it still came in a lot lower than I was expecting!
