Trek 400? info please...

My brother called this morning, he bought me a Trek 400 road bike he found at a yard sale.

He didn't have it with him when he called, but said it's a lugged frame with down tube shifters- Shimano (didn't know which grouppo- he thought 600). It's missing the seat post and seat and needs new rubber but for the price he paid...(read: cheap!)

He also said it has Profile Aero bars on it, which makes it worth the price right there.

He said the guy selling it didn't know squat diddly about bikes because when he asked what size it was the guy didn't know. The guy said he bought a Cannondale to replace the Trek so my bro asked what size that was and he didn't know.

How do you buy a NEW bike without having it fit?

Any preliminary help is appreciated...I'll post more info when I get the bike home
