Streichy, actually I have those levers, in a mid-1960s catalogue. However, I'm confident they are not OEM. Neither are the crankarms or front derailleur.

Yea after digging around I almost think they might be Schwinn levers, not originals for sure. The front derailler looks too new to be original now that I'm really staring at it.

Crankset looks like the other semi pros though, manufactured december of 69. Yay this is fun to learn!

Hello! Been lurking a while, but now its time to actually post.

I recently got my hands on a Nishiki Competition in very good shape, nearly mint.

Specs:

Frame is Champion #2
Wheels are Araya
Handlebar says Sakae Custom + Road Champion Japan
Handlebar stem is Cinelli (not original?)
Saddle says Taihei Painless or something underneath. Saddle post/stem says Mighty
Front and back brakes + brake levers are Gran Compe
Front and back derailleurs is Suntour Superbe
The crank says Super Mighty
The biggest gear (or whats it called?) on the cassette seems like its been replaced. Its painted black (the others are not) and it says Shimano MF-ZH06

The serial is EJ103957 . Looking at the opening post that dates it to 1980? It has 6 digits after the J, not 5. Maybe they made a lot of frames that year? Maybe its far newer? I dont know. Thats kinda why Im posting here too =)

Welcome to the forums. Your Competition is a European market model manufactured in 1980. An annual production of 100,000+ frames is not that large. Some of the larger Japanese companies, such as Bridgestone and Miyata were approaching one million bicycles per year around that era. Unfortunately, we can't tell exactly when during 1980 your frame was built, but based on the high number it may be 1981 model manufactured in late 1980.

Typically, the individual gears on a freewheel or cassette are called cogs or sprockets. What you have, based on the part number, is a Shimano 6 speed freewheel, not a cassette. In a freewheel, the cogs and freewheel body are removed from the hub as one unit. In a cassette, the cogs are removed from the freewheel body, which remains attached to the hub. The combined hub and freewheel body is typically called a freehub.

Yours is a relatively modern, Hyperglide compatible, replacement for the original freewheel. Hyperglide refers the the ramps stamped into the cogs that improve shifting, especially under load. The black large cog is not a replacement. The different colour is simply a relatively modern trend on Shimano freewheels.

I will be getting this 80 Grand Tour 15 soon. Right now it is being facilitated by a great BF member. Appears all original but dusty. I will definitely include a SN for the thread database.

Hey there, new poster here and I was hoping I could get some help identifying this guy. I thought it was an olympic 10 but I could very well be wrong. The paint was in pretty rough shape when I got it and I'm in the process of fixing that. Anyway, some help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to restore it as close to original as I can and decals are the next step. The components appear to be a bit of a mixed bag and most likely not original. Serial # is KS330387

This is interesting because it has a SunTour Seven rear derailleur, which was introduced for the 1976 model year, yet it still has the older oriental logo. The front derailleur appears to be Shimano and it has a cotterless crank. The serial dates it circa 1974-1975. So, I assume it has been frankenbiked and neither the derailleurs nor crankset are OEM. The stay design is not typical of the International of this period. That leaves the Olympic and Sport variants, both of which used the same frame. It looks like it may have the remnants of Custom Sport on the down tube.

Now that you point it out you can definitely make out the "Custom Sport" on the downtube. Thanks you for the additional information, it is much appreciated.

Saved a Prestige frame and fork.....(tange 2) This one will be a single speed bike for coffee runs. Looks like the serial number is W617445, mid 80's? Found an old bar and Nitto stem in the junk box. Cheap wheel set until I can find something cool. :thumb:

I think the serial number is WE17 445. The "E" is for 1985, the year of frame manufacture. It is a 1986 model year.

I picked up this bike for $11 just to get the bull moose bars and SunTour thumbies but I see that biplane fork and I start to get silly ideas about rebuilding it.

Its rough and its got a stuck seat post but I am hoping I can deal with the seat post and at the very least pass this along to someone who'll bring it back or least make a commuter out it so that biplane fork can fly down the roads and trails again.

Long time creeper first time posting here. Love the forum.

I was gifted this vintage Nishiki project bike, really was hoping to fix it up but have a kid and selling off some of my bikes. So i'm hoping I might be able to get some information here to help in selling the bike. Id like it to go to someone who will appreciate it. I always wanted a Nishiki but this one is too big for me and I just dont have the time to fix it. Rear Hub needs re-packed I think.

Any information would greatly appreciated.

It's a Canadian market, 1981 Nishiki Superbe, frame manufactured in October 1980, top of the line model with Tange #1 tubeset, SunTour Superbe derailleurs (hence the model name), Sugino Super Mighty Custom crankset, Dia-Compe New Gran Compe brakeset and Sanshin Pro-Am hubs laced to Araya 20A rims. Claimed weight, 21.5 lbs. It appears to be completely OEM but is missing the original lever hoods. One of the more desirable Nishiki. Unfortunately, it's too big for me.

Just got a very cool Custom Sport and am having trouble dating it. Here is a pic of the only numbers I can find on the underside of the bottom bracket. Any help appreciated. BTW, it's a 12 speed with Suntour AR derailleurs and Suntour stem shifters, with Sugino RT cranks.
