Schwinn BB shell question
 

So I'm refinishing the Continental today and I have a question about the welded seam on the bottom bracket. It would be a shame to go through all this work to make the frame look better but have this horrible thing down there. Maybe it won't be visible very often but I'll know it's there. Would there be any problem with grinding or filing this off?

I can't imagine that it would be there for much structure, but I'm not a welder.

You could certainly grind and then sand it smooth, essentially completing the work Schwinn left undone.

I'm glad I've got a die grinder, that's for sure.

I had noticed that on a couple of Schwinns that weren't slated to be repainted... If I ever need to repaint, I will know. Thanks for taking the lead! ;)

Oh, and whatever primer that Schwinn used in the early 80's is a giant pain to get off with paint stripper. The color coat just about slid off the frame but I gave up after way too much scraping.

Once again, the die grinder with a wire brush wheel saved the day. :D
