State of the Art
This is a general notice to my fellow C&Vers.
As many of you know, I am working on the finishing touches of Pastor Bob's Super Sport!;) After the tragedy, it has come together quite well. If my luck holds, it should be done next week. After that gets shipped out, I have a few other frames that are patiently waiting...:rolleyes: And if these last 2 frames are any indicator, the others should be done by 2011.:eek: Which is why I haven't gotten back to the rest of you in regards to painting YOUR frames. And there have been many...which I appreciate. But I can't see taking any more frames until the ones that ARE here, are done & returned. I also recently lost my computer, so I had to borrow one to make this post. So, for those with frames here, I am going to be getting to those, as soon as PB's is done & gone. And when those are done, I'm going to retire & actually RIDE some of the bikes I have sitting around collecting dust. ;) Thanks to all for your support, understanding, appreciation, patience & humor!:D :beer: Dr. Deltron |

Can I get on the waiting list? I don't have anything to paint, at the moment, but it sounds like I need to stand in line anyway. :p

I did some sanding on the PX today. Guess it was just a sanding kinda day.;) I'm sanding off all the gold pinstripes I did on the primer with the Kemper Gold Pen. Which I did for practice before opting to use a bristle brush on the Corky lug lines. So all frames inch closer...closer.....clo..:p |
I certainly hope I did not contribute to pounding the last nail into the coffin of the Dr.Deltron Custom Bicycle Painting business? :o It is my job to conduct funerals, but not cause one. ;)
Mark, you do deserve a break. Let's call it a sabbatical until the twins head to school and all the children grow older. Wait a second---- that means you as well. :p I am THRILLED :love: with what I see in the pictures and I'm looking forward to the build. I do promise one thing: "It will not be Neal Lerner's Super Sport!" ;) Anyway--- I do have a real funeral to write today and conduct tomorrow. I'm glad it's not in CA! :p |

Being relatively new to the C&V forum, may I ask you a question you've probably already answered, before you pedal off into the sunset?
What (if anything) is a fairly easy, thorough way to sand those tight areas like the chainstay/BB shell junction? Thanks, and happy retirement. I've gained from your posts via searches here. Gorgeous work. |

Back in the day, it was pretty much all index finger work. Then I found Tadpoles!:D NOOO, not the recumbent trikes. Although I have found them two:D Tadpoles are little rubber sanding grommets that are made for detailing woodwork. I tear a sheet of sandpaper into 20 pieces and wrap the pieces around the tadpole and have at it. They come with many shapes & edges. The last set I got was 12 tadpoles for like $18. If I had my old computer, I would have the link handy, but I know that I got them through my friends at shop.com But as cool as Tadpoles are, I still have many other instruments for those BB/chainstay areas. One is an orange stick. Used to push back cuticles. I've sanded the ends to get into really tricky spots. I have also shaped paint stiring sticks and other hardwood into many sanding tools. Even a standard pencil with eraser. Also be sure to have the BIG tub of elbow grease handy!;) |

Dr.D and I spent an hour on the phone last evening. With exception of a final coat of clear and some curing time, "Sporty" my '72 Schwinn Super Sport I bought from el twe last year, is nearly ready to build back into a rideable bicycle! :beer: He describes the frame and fork as "rideable jewlery," and "perfect to present to the pope." :roflmao:
Because he wants to carefully fit some of the components to the frame in order to avoid damaging the finish, we talked about me sending about half the pieces to him prior to shipping it from CA to NH. So here's my latest question in need of C&V member's guidance. It kept me awake last evening and I plan to call Dr.D later today to discuss this more. Should I send all the components to Dr.D, let him build the bike so he can then take the pictures he wants, even show off the bike, and enter it in a show, before sending the entire bike back here to NH? I won't dare ride "Sporty" before June 1 due to the conditions of the roads and the lousy weather we have here during May. What say you? Thanks for your help! |

PB,
I am sure it is hard to resist having the frame sent priority overnight as soon as the paint dries, but I think you would appreciate it in the long run having the bike built up by the person that probably cares the most about that finish. And if you are serious about him showing it, then that will even add more to the mystique of your bike. Not to mention if it wins something.:D |

Thanks for posting the "before" pics. Dr.D confessed today that he didn't recall its condition. :p I had to replace the fork due to the fused stem inside the steering tube. Thus the reason for the chrome "socks." Here's a larger version of "Sporty." http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p...ortyApr208.jpg So do I use the chrome "hat" for the fork crown. One can be seen in el twe's "before" picture above. We are leaning away from using it and Dr.D doubts it will fit after so many layers of paint and clear. :D |

The inspiration for the box pin stripping came from this '40s Scwhinn Superior I spotted on ebay some time early last year.

Here's a close-up of the seat tube. If you remember, the frame fell and hit the floor and put a few dings, including the seat collar rim, thus the gold-leaf edging.
