Condor BB shell rust, eek!

I just recently got this really nice 1998 Condor racer with 653 tubing off eBay, the item description did say about the BB surface rust but I didn't know it was this bad, what should I do about it? There are a few other small rust spots around the frame but I'm most concerned about the bottom bracket area

Any help or ideas much appreciated

Sam

Take the crank and BB off and remove all the paint and rust from the BB shell and see what you are left with. From the picture it looks like the spindle is rusted as well, so I would want to inspect the BB before putting a load on it.

Thanks for the reply, I think I'll do that. Also its a Campag BB (well i think so, the rest of the components are Campag Avanti) so will I need different tools? I've already got a pin spanner, which I'm not sure if I'll need? Does anyone think its in need of a respray? Or at least can I do something to protect it until I have the money to get a respray?

Regards, Sam

Looks more like the paint + primer flaked off and the bare metal beneath acquired a layer of surface rust. Shouldn't be of much concern.

Thats what I thought , but how can I protect it at least? I've heard about clear nail varnish covering rust but on this scale? What d'you think? Thanks again for your interest, SAm

repainting of the area is required.
